How about an NS/Stick with a GK pickup for MIDI? This would build on your knowledge of bass, get you into the world of tapping, extend your register upward, open up the world of MIDI and still leave standard bass sounds available to you. Here is a picture but this model doesn't have the GK.

BTW, what is your keys guy using to emulate a Mellotron? Or does he have a real one? Curious for my own sake.

He's using a EHX Mel9 pedal that he has built in to an old electric organ. It sounds the part, but doesn't look the part.

Seems to me you need a pedal board with at least 10 pedals so you can become an efx factory. Or possibly a multi-efx pedal.

Been there, done that =) I got delays, phasers, choruses, flangers and A LOT of distortion pedals.

The guitarist in my band has a Korg Kaossilator mounted to his mic stand. He uses it to add some interesting sonic effects and tones to certain songs.

I'd vote ukulele, I got two (a soprano and a concert) and whilst I haven't spent much time with either lately, they ARE fun to play. Not sure how it'd work in your setting but then again, that is up to you

Seriously though, a good place to start is a set of bass pedals. Roland makes a midi version that you can control any midi sound source with. That way you can get some low end going while playing melodic stuff up higher on the bass, or chords, or whatever. You can do rhythm guitar kind of stuff on the bass and still have some low end.

Step sequencers are really fun. Too bad the original Tenori-On is so hard to find (and therefore super expensive). It was cool because it had LEDs on the back that mirrored the front buttons so you could hold it up and let your audience see what you were doing. There's probably an app version of it now but having real buttons and flashing lights is always more fun.

I'm the bassist in a trio that plays kind of psychedelic, progressive, jam based rock music. The other two guys plays drums and keyboard instrument (mainly Hammond organ) respectively. We have been talking about getting some new and fun instruments to play along with to broaden our sonic palette and expand our jam sections. The keys guy have a bunch of different synths, a mellotron, a Pianet and some other stuff. He also plays flute. The drummer has been bringing some percussion instruments to rehearsals. But what about me? What could I get into?

Guitars are out, the principle of this band is "No six strings allowed". The synth and keys parts are covered. I already have a couple of FX pedals (delay, chorus and other) to play around with while playing bass. I have been thinking about Theremin, especially the Moog Theremini. I already have a cheap Theremin that I have used a bit, but it's hard to control volume and pitch on that in a live situation.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

I took up saxophone a few years ago. Bought a tenor but it wasn't deep enough so I bought a baritone, then they had a baby alto!!! My favorite is baritone. Saxophones seem to be sold by weight, the alto me cost the least and the baritone the most, can't afford a bass sax…

Well, both the keys guy and I also play guitar. There is however a million bands consisting of guitar, bass and drums that plays rock music. Doing that with the subtraction of the guitar and the addition of the hammond organ makes us stand out in the crowd, at least that is the plan. The band was founded on that notion and we have never had a guitarist.
