Other fun instrument to play, except bass?

I'm the bassist in a trio that plays kind of psychedelic, progressive, jam based rock music. The other two guys plays drums and keyboard instrument (mainly Hammond organ) respectively. We have been talking about getting some new and fun instruments to play along with to broaden our sonic palette and expand our jam sections. The keys guy have a bunch of different synths, a mellotron, a Pianet and some other stuff. He also plays flute. The drummer has been bringing some percussion instruments to rehearsals. But what about me? What could I get into?

Guitars are out, the principle of this band is "No six strings allowed". The synth and keys parts are covered. I already have a couple of FX pedals (delay, chorus and other) to play around with while playing bass. I have been thinking about Theremin, especially the Moog Theremini. I already have a cheap Theremin that I have used a bit, but it's hard to control volume and pitch on that in a live situation.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Well how about a folk instrument .

Like tabala , bagpipes (there are different version and all of the sound good ,the European is great the Asian is great )

I used to be in a duo. I played bass and sometimes my guitar player would play bass and I would play melodica. We did songs like Lowrider where the bass can hold it down and I did the sax/harmonica part on melodica.

How about cello. It has a great sound and it might be interesting with effects.

If you can't play another instrument, it's kinda tough to expect to just pick it up and expect to be proficient. Maybe electric upright bass. Bowing can give some great tones, and is open to effects. The keyboardist can cover the bottom if you solo.

electric violin: there are some ridiculously cheap ones, they can be routed through pedals for 'lead guitar' effects, and they come in some wild (psychedelic?) colors. .02.

Anything with bowed strings through as many effects as you can feasibly fit in your car is the way to go.

Strangely, I found myself in a similar situation, stemming from instrument switching issues, I'm bass, sometimes guitar, rarely drums, I needed something else to accommodate other skill sets, and I am going electric violin, with a fretboard applique, slow going at first, but will be stellar in the end. Such a great opportunity to string up old pedals!

Mandolin is really addicting, and expands your musicality by teaching you to think in 5ths as well. Super portable and fits into almost any acoustic setting too
