Harmonica. You can get some really interesting sounds with effect pedals

Another possibility would be a Bamboo Sax or a Xaphoon which are also referred to as a “pocket sax.”

These are small reed instruments with a remarkably full tone that are inexpensive alternatives to a real saxophone - and surprisingly easy to play.

Most people are surprised at the sound you can get out of these instruments. Especially close-miked with a little reverb or delay added.

I'm the bassist in a trio that plays kind of psychedelic, progressive, jam based rock music. The other two guys plays drums and keyboard instrument (mainly Hammond organ) respectively. We have been talking about getting some new and fun instruments to play along with to broaden our sonic palette and expand our jam sections. The keys guy have a bunch of different synths, a mellotron, a Pianet and some other stuff. He also plays flute. The drummer has been bringing some percussion instruments to rehearsals. But what about me? What could I get into?

Guitars are out, the principle of this band is "No six strings allowed". The synth and keys parts are covered. I already have a couple of FX pedals (delay, chorus and other) to play around with while playing bass. I have been thinking about Theremin, especially the Moog Theremini. I already have a cheap Theremin that I have used a bit, but it's hard to control volume and pitch on that in a live situation.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

The guitarist in my band has a Korg Kaossilator mounted to his mic stand. He uses it to add some interesting sonic effects and tones to certain songs.

These are super cool. They’re like a harmonica with a keyboard. I used to play Amazing Grace on one between sets a while back and it made a somewhat convincing bagpipe sound because of the ability to drone. It wouldn’t step on the keys either.

Get a sample triggering pedal or hand triggering device MIDI'd to a sampler box so you can randomly add things like genuine fart tones, burps and other obnoxious sound effects to your bands psychedelic jam mix.

I would also vote that your sampler be loaded with a full spectrum of barnyard and jungle animal sounds.

You could try and play bass guitar.
