Other Instruments

I used to play cello & would like to start playing it again. I mess around on guitar and piano. I've got my guitar tuned B-C, so I use it as a piccolo version of my 6 string bass.

Double bass is what I played throughout high school and what I relearned how to play in college. I consider myself a doubler.

Got all my formal and classical training on Clarinet/Bass Clarinet. After 7 or 8 years of that I had had enough. But I still have trouble not thinking in clarinet fingerings and reading bass clef as treble...

I'm trying to learn guitar too, and some things from bass help the learning process and some things don't. For instance, when I first started playing, my dad (violinist +40 years) kept telling me it was sharp, but when I checked the tuning it was fine. Turned out I was just pressing so hard on the strings that I made it go sharp.

I play a bit of piano, and used to play saxophone as well. I still sing a fair amount.

This past spring, I discovered the Native American Flute (NAF).

The cool thing about this instrument is that it is tuned to a single key, and typically, the primary scale is the minor pentatonic (plus the octave).

So basically, you have only six notes to work with which means your timing, phrasing, and rhythm take on a much greater role.

Playing the NAF has been an eye opening experience that I'm hoping will transfer to my guitar and bass playing.
