well, I've tried modding the heck out of the black cat to see if I could make it into something that I like but to no avail. there really isn't much to work with since there's so little circuit to begin with. it does add mid bass, but loses both the low and top end, plus the fizzy note decay opamp distortion is something I just don't dig at all so this one isn't going to get put into an enclosure.

BTW, I come to find out that the black cat OD-1 is the exact same circuit as the Ibanez black cat with the only difference being the chip (the Ibanez used an LM1458N, and the OD-1 uses an OP275). if you were using one to push a dirty amp, it might be okay, but IMO running it into a clean bass amp for OD/dirt, it's unacceptable.

Hey, John, have you by any chance tried the Fulltone RTO? It seems like something that'd do well with bass.

well, I built one today and it's a very nice sounding pedal. AFAIK, fulltone has offered at least two versions. the V1 with an LF353N chip and the V2 with a JRC4558 chip. I believe they both have the same 1n4005/1N4148 diode clipping. it's basically a modified tubescreamer without the input buffer but, IMO, it really doesn't sound like one (it sounds ALOT better).

stock, I personally like it better than any version of the OCD (V1-V4) for use with a bass, but since i like to mod some of my pedals a bit, I added a switch to select from the stock 1N4005/1N4148 clipping diodes to mosfet/schottkey clippers for a little more versatility. I also added a bass control (ala the timmy) so I can bring up the low end if I want more bottom.

Very cool! Got any clips by any chance? :D

I had a fist generation Ibanez tube screamer when they first came out, loaned it to a guitar player.........last I saw of it. Worked great with a bass. Now I use a Black Soviet Big Muff for over the top stuff. For something more subtle like a driven tube amp I really like Ibanez Bass Tube Screamer. It's a stack in a box. I use it when I am given a back line that needs help or inspots where the guitarist is soloing,it really fills things out. Honestly I'd love to leave it on all the time!
