overdrive/fuzz quest

i just built a BJFE blueberry to compare to my mad professor one. I haven't had a chance to test them side by side yet, but so far the clone sounds great.

John - where did you find a BJFE Blueberry schematic? That is my all time favorite overdrive and I still kick myself for selling it. Such a cool, dark character - very much like sweating power tubes trhough a sealed cab IMO. What do you think of it? If you're willing to build more I'd buy one today.

Sorry if this one was mentioned elsewhere in this thread(search stuck on "loading" and would NOT return results) but I LOVE my Danelectro CO-1(first version, gray[silver?] with DRIVE in blue lettering) for OD on my Conklin active GT-7....its got more low end (stock, no mods!) than a Bad Monkey and it's TRUE BYPASS---how do I know? I had it in my effect chain and it wasn't working, but everything else was and I got signal--then I realized the Dano wasn't plugged in(OOPS!)..but there ya go, if a battery dies ya still get signal! That's my suggestion for mild drive to full-on roar.

diversion from building overdrives ;):

I dig it. compared to my MP blueberry, it's similar, but it's capable of being a little cleaner, sounds less congested, is a bit more transpartent (i seem to hear more of the original bass) and it has more low end.
i got the circuit by looking at friend's original BJFE blueberry.

I also recently built a BJF LGW (little green wonder) and then slightly retuned for use with a bass. it's another excellent sounding overdrive /distortion. it's roughly based on a tubesceamer but IMO, it sounds nothing like one (i'm not fond of tubesceamers on bass and I have a couple of the orignals). its 'body' knob makes it very versatile and can go from almost clean to heavy dirt.

Probably a silly question but what are the "mother" circuits?
I mean there seems to be just a few circuits that are the basis of the all the others such as the Tube Screamer, Big Muff, Rat, Fuzzface etc. (I realize I probably don't have those right but you get the idea I hope).

well, many of the 'boutique' pedals are based on standard pedals (i.e big muff, tubescreamer, fuzz face, tonebender, etc) and then modified, but others like the mosfet overdrive, the OKKO diablo/basstard, most of the catalinbread and wampler OD's and the runoffgroove circuits (ginger & flipster) aren't based on anything else.

I just finished another one, the OKKO Dominator. IMO, it's a really good sounding high gain distortion pedal that doesn't use diodes or mosfets for clipping, but rather pushes a Burr-Brown OPA2604 into clipping. Its tone stack makes it very versatile, and with the gain knob fully counterclockwise, it cleans up pretty well too.

I just can't stop building these things!

got my BJFE little green wonder completed:

the later ones use a TLC272 cmos chip, but I went with the LF353N that was used in the earlier ones (for more headroom) and then slightly modded it for a little more low end. IMO, this is another great sounding OD for bass.

I just boxed up my ghetto stomp build. for it being such a super simple circuit, it actually sounds awesome.
I also added a Cornish buffer that can be switched in or out. with the buffer switched in, it has a little more lows and highs but it sounds great both ways.

....next i'll box up another Nick Greer clone build, the sucker punch. ;)

BTW, I did some more chip rolling in the black cat and I think that it sounds best with a JRC4562 (the chip used in a DAM Ezekeil), so i'm pretty happy with it now. it still retains the low end and mids, but it opened up the top end more a removed almost all of the fizzy note decay.

I also built a Brunetti Mercury Box yesterday. they have an 18V charge pump in them and it sounded pretty good 100% stock, but the 3n3 cap on the output dulled it a bit too much for my taste. i changed it to a 1n5 and raised the value of the first three 22n coupling caps and it sounds great with a bass now. it's a very smooth distortion pedal capable of a ton of dirt. it uses a TL071 fet opamp to drive two J201 JFets into distortion, then goes into the EQ (bass & treble controls) and a final Jfet used as an output amp, post EQ to boost the signal back up.

Mercury box completed. this pedal's overdrive & distortion is so smooth that when you dial up the dirt it loses some of the punch of the clean signal, so I added a blender circuit to it and now (IMO) it's an awesome sounding pedal. since it's no longer an exact clone of the mercury box, I rename mine the 'Merc'.
