The wire running between the distortion switch to the pot and the footswitch is an uneffected (or direct) out. Because you're moving to true bypass, you can disconnect that from the footswitch and forget about it. Although, you need to retain the white wire running from the board to the distortion switch.

I should also say that I generally don't mod pedals I can't afford to ruin, and so it would be great to hear some agreement on any of this advice from others.

That's a really good point, and since I picked this up moderately cheap and already pretty beat up, I'm not going to be devastated. That said, I've got a pretty steady hand, so I should be able to reverse whatever I disconnect. This is my first time doing anything to a pedal, but not the first time I've soldered something tiny.


I don't recommend trying to install your own preamp though...

Edit: also, I love this website for moments just such as this; I've pulled so much from this forum and I wish I could give something back that's a little more substantive than posting "I see what you did there..." in OT or some mindless trivia in bassists. That's why I'm trying to post pics of every step (haven't uploaded em yet), just so it's useful.
