Overhyped Effects

No matter the drive or modulation I put after it, it just lacks character. I think the OC-5 does way better at doing organ sounds(clean, -1 and +1) or using the +1 and clean for ambient texture. Really high quality pedal, but I think it's oversold as a path to synth sounds. I can easily see myself replacing it with a Source Audio C4 to really get a range of synth tones.

I can see that, although personally I never had synth expectations from it... I love my OC-5, but I chose it solely because I needed "OC-2, but doesn't glitch when I hold a note"

Yeah, the Boss TU-2 sucks out all my tone when I switch it on. Guy at Guitar Center tried to tell me it's "Working as intended" and wouldn't admit this was an out-and-out lie. Needless to say, returned it and swore off using effects for the rest of my life. It probably needed a 12AX7 put in there to be useful in any way :meh:

Yeah, I used to claim stuff like it "sucks all the tone", then I realized there's hundreds of professional musicians using that pedal with phenomenal tone….

My experience with this type of pedal is that is they only shine in the intended use case, which is putting a bit more pressure on a 'close to the edge' input stage of an all-tube preamp. In that, the overall performance depends a lot on the nature of preamp and how nicely the preamp and pedal play together. My hands-on comes from using a Klon clone (EHX Soul-Food) into a Dumble ODS clone (KittyHawk Quattro) for the treble side of my Chapman Stick - the results are outstanding. The Quattro is also very happy being fed by a Digitech Bad Monkey which in contrast to the Klon was, until recently, amongst the most under-rated TS-style pedals out there. Of course the Quattro, being an ODS clone, is already more than capable of going from super-clean jingle-jangle to 'burn down the universe' distortion without any external support, so there is that.

important point - I've played lots of things that would sound amazing hitting the front end of an amp preamp hard… but for my direct to PA and IEM setup - less so as it's too much of a pain to keep the gain under control

I came to the Barbershop with some trepidation, mainly because of both the original glowing reviews and tempered by the fact that some others really didn't like it and found it "farty". I thought that the opinions seemed rather polarised (although tilted to the positive) but was worried about which camp I'd fall into, and if it was the negative one, whether that meant there was something wrong with my gear, my settings, or my ears.

I found I liked it for a specific use in my chain (following some other drives and providing some power tube-like characteristics) in which it functioned better than anything else in that spot, but it wasn't my first choice as a primary "do it all" drive pedal.

"More" was mentioned, and I think it fits here due to how subtle and popular it is. But Sushi is able to keep pedals in stock. None of them sell out like Broughton or 3 Leaf. If anything most Sushi Box pedals might be under hyped.

Klons are a good one, and I own two clones lol. As a subtle boost they aren't bad, but I don't see the appeal of using them as a drive pedal.

I hate to paint with a broad brush, but I've never had good luck with EHX pedals even though I know they have a bit of a cult following from some groups of players.
