Alone into a clean channel is totally pointless. My experience with this type of pedal is that is they only shine in the intended use case, which is putting a bit more pressure on a 'close to the edge' input stage of an all-tube preamp. In that, the overall performance depends a lot on the nature of preamp and how nicely the preamp and pedal play together. My hands-on comes from using a Klon clone (EHX Soul-Food) into a Dumble ODS clone (KittyHawk Quattro) for the treble side of my Chapman Stick - the results are outstanding. The Quattro is also very happy being fed by a Digitech Bad Monkey which in contrast to the Klon was, until recently, amongst the most under-rated TS-style pedals out there. Of course the Quattro, being an ODS clone, is already more than capable of going from super-clean jingle-jangle to 'burn down the universe' distortion without any external support, so there is that.
