Overhyped Features You Just Had to Have

View attachment 1134029 Honestly the only time this affected me was at around 13 when I was strictly a 6 string lead guitarist lol. HAD to have a BC Rich with a Floyd Rose blah blah and fine tuning blah blah blah. After that quickly died out a Tele and Peavey T60 were just what the Dr ordered.
*BC Rich and Bart Simpson shirt will make it easy for future generations to date this pic.

That and the haircut

I like MIDs, so I thought that I needed the newer Ibanez with the 3-band EQ
turns out whatever band they're manipulating with their MIDs knob is not the MID that I like
1,200 Hz is the one that trips my trigger, which I found out when demoing Rumble amps

the newer one also had the quick change battery compartment & quick access truss rod cover
Quick change battery compartments on active basses is also SUCH a great idea!!

A trend that really needs to die is owning more than 2 basses.

Funny, I was going to say I'm glad I got over feeling like I needed just a main player and a backup. Now I have lots of basses and I'm much happier this way. I may favor one for weeks or months, or favor one for use with certain ensembles, but every time I open a case I haven't touched in a while, it is like being reintroduced to an old friend.

I'm a firm believer that any bass can work in any situation, and I could be completely happy with just one or two, but it sure is fun to have choices.

6 string for sure had 2 but in the end I'm a groove guy and a 5 is perfect for me.

I was all active too, now spend lots of time on passive and see the benefits to both.

Until last year I was never a P guy, I never liked the E string sound now I spend most of my time but I think thats more due to the music im playing but maybe not tastes change.

I fell for the Warwick hype and active hype at the same time. Wasn't hype though. I bought a cheap Warwick Rockbass to use while my RIC was getting work done to it. I liked that bass so much I bought a German Warwick and now the RIC sits in the case. I guess in the end, I fell for the RIC hype even though it never sounded like I wanted it to.

Glad you were the first to say it... :)

I have owned 9 Rics from 1968 till now (still have 2). They usually sit at home while the Fenders see playing time. I have never gotten the hysteria about the Ric. Back in the 60s - it wasn't really a big deal. Almost ALL of the West coast guys were playing them - myself included.

I don't know if it was Chris Squire or perhaps Geddy Leee that pushed the "legend" ahead - but indeed, it grew. They became somehow "magical". Supposedly, the Ric is the end all to all things musically. It will absolutely transform music - from A to Z. :)

Now having said this - I still occasionally take one with me and play a song or two, but usually it sits in a stand for the lookey Lous to slather over. But what the hell! Hype or not - they ARE cool to look at!! :)

The first quality bass I bought was my 1995 Warwick Corvette Standard Passive 4 string, I bought it new and although I do not use it these days as my main player it is an absolutely fantastic bass....the craftsmanship, wood, playability and OH MY GOD THE TONE!

I even got all hyped up and bought another in the early 2000's and although it was a nice bass it was FAR different than my original, not even close TBH.

Also had a period where I was all over the active electronics and was swapping all kinds of preamps in and out of a few originally passive basses, I am over that now and the only active bass I own is my 4 string Musicman HH Buttercream Sterling which is active OEM.

Also was caught up shlepping around a giant Ampeg 810 & Heavy beast of an Amp for a number of years back in the early 2000's........I don't miss that one bit.

These days I have simplified it all, Fender USA '75 RI that I love, lightweight class D amp & will be purchasing a lightweight 410 cab to replace the NV610 and 410hlf in the near future as well.

Also.....

Get off my lawn!
