Overrated bass players

I have only read the last page, but I think I can add some insight (I hope):o

Anyway, I think Michael Anthony is a good role player. He isn't talentless, but he knows that Soloing is Eddies thing. Maybe now that they're all clean and sober, He'll rip one off.

There are some great bassists playing in the touring bands for N'sync, Backstreet, J-lo, Britney Spears, Etc. Definitely lucky bastards because, even though they are playing soul draining pop drivel, they are getting well paid to do it!

Please drain my soul Christina Aguilera!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why anyone dogs on Fieldy. I havn't been playing bass for long, and I am no where near even an average player. I suck, but. KoRn was the first band I ever liked, first CD I ever bought. I can't stand nu-metal anymore, but I loved KoRn.

If you ask me, Fieldy is innovative. KoRn has 2 7 stringed guitarist, and that more than obliterates the low end. He dosn't play bass, he uses it as a second drum, which I think is neat and creative. He isn't the best bass player, but he does what he does well. It's not like he's trying to get funky or groove or anything.

Edit - And anyone who says Les Claypool is overratd becaus he's "Sloppy" is ********. Let's see you sing, dance around and still try to pull off some of the stuff he does.

I can't say I've listened to much Silverchair stuff, but what I have heard sounds a bit too much like watered-down Nirvana, and the bass is just root-note hogging.

You surley must not have listened to much Silverchair, they sound nothing like Nirvana,that label was just put upon them becuase there singer has long blonde hair. I would recomend listening to the albums Neon Ballroom and Diorama. Also I would recomend catching them live or downloading some videos of them live. You will find that they are an awsome live band, and that chris isn't that bad of a bass player.

These people were obviously never alive during all that Beatlemania. For them, it's "Wings and that other band he was in before that" kind of thing. Pathetic. Pop bass playing was pretty rudimentary in the early 60s and McCartney took it away from that.

I grew up during Beatlemania and what would there be without McCartney, I ask you? He changed the whole approach to bass. But then you meet these kids today raving over their favorite groups and HATE the Beatles never realizing these groups would not exist without them.

Then again I was that way about 50s music as a kid. Hated it. Now I'm 50s aficianado.

Very good point. One of the earliest jassmen to record was a trombonist named Kid Ory. He was called King of the Tailgate Trombonists. He never put in more notes than was necessary. Other jassmen said Ory did more with 3 notes than others could do with 33.

Nikki Sixx seems to pop up every time a bassist needs a trashing but the guy was Motley Crue. He wrote the songs, the lyrics and basically held the band together and built a pretty succesful empire doing so. His talents on the bass are not noticeable but they get the job done for that style of music. What a lot of people don't realize is that as a songwriter the guy is a machine. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill both have tracks on their CD's that were penned by Nikki. Of course Mr. Sixx is to blame for that horrid "Sixxbird" that came out of the Gibson factory a couple of years ago. Yuck!

This thread's too long to muddle through it, so forgive me if this has been mentioned.

How in God's name did Che Cheng EVER make it big and why does he continue to show up in the mags?!? He admits to being mediocre.

Talk about right place at the right time. :hmm:

Come on people, grow up! When you're in the same league as Flea, Les Claypool, Sting (gulp!) or Paul McCartney ( :eek: ), then maybe, MAYBE this thread will have its reasons to be.

I summon a moderator to please close and delete this stinking pile of crap passing for a thread.

Is he dancing around while recording? And if he's sloppy he can play and record a seperate track, and he is fairly slopy.
Plus coming from a guy who wonders why people hate Fieldy, then says "he doesn't play bass" OF COURSE WE'RE GOING TO FRICKIN HATE FIELDY. Anyone who does not play bass but randomly hits nots and is that cocky and stupid (he says he doesn't need to practice any more) deserves to die.

To the people complaining about others who are putting down bass players: That was the entire aim of the thread! No more than pointless, harmless fun.
To the people who confuse "the best" with "my favorite": You need to think a while about the difference between these concepts.
To the people who insist on these ridiculous either/ors, like "old vs. new", "musical masturbation vs. serving the song", "innovation vs. role playing", and so on: Why do we musicians have to be so dogmatic? Imagine if painters said they "hated" Rembrandt because he never created anything surreal, like Dali? Or if writers said Hemingway was overrated because he used short sentences? Or if chefs said that beef is useless because it doesn't taste like fish? I mean, this whole thread is idiotic!!
(But then again, here I am typing away, right?)
