OVNIFX Smoothie Compressor

Do these also have limited availability? I like the acknowledgement in the review of the reluctance to go further down the Ross route. I happen to love Ross type (particularly the Keeley two knob) comps for bass, as I tend to use it more as tone coloration/boost than the simple limiting or transparent compression of "fancier" designs. I like to hear my compressor working. That said, I'll be experimenting with an MXR Bass comp to see if I can send a little less color off the top into my Fairfield Barbershop. If this batch is still available in the next few weeks,
I'll be placing my order. Can't wait.

Mine arrived today. Props on the super-speedy order fulfillment, Bongo!

Just got back from a July 4 (+1) picnic at my in-laws, and found the package in the mailbox. Haven't yet plugged it in, but just wanted to comment that the build quality appears top-shelf. That's based on the heft of the thing, the clarity of the graphics, and feel of the switch and pots--smooth, indeed. :)

Got a chance to play with the Smoothie today in my practice room. The bucks were well-spent, indeed!

All the controls work well--meaning that wherever they're set they're musically useful. The unit itself is quiet; of course, high squish means that whatever noise is coming from the bass gets emphasized a bit, as that's in the nature of compression. I'd say its forte is fattening, tightening, and...smoothing. (Just what I was wanting from it.)

For me, the deal-maker features are the ability to blend compressed and dry signal right in the box, and the ability to EQ the compressed signal. I was looking for the tone to sound polished but not processed, and it was easy to get that with the blend and EQ knobs. The brief instruction sheet is very helpful to figuring out how to get where you want to go with it.

I gotta disagree with Bongo about one thing, though. Toward the bottom of his review of the Smoothie, he commented that it wouldn't be a game-changer in the world of compressor pedals. Dunno 'bout that. It just might be...

Got some more time to experiment today. The ability to blend compressed signal and dry signal is a fantastically musical feature, IMHO. At about equal proportions I can get that juicy thickening from the compression, but it doesn't _sound_ compressed; the dynamics still respond nicely to how I attack the string. I like that very much.

And set to 100% compressed signal (by way of experimenting), it's a very good-sounding compressor. IOW, there's no need to blend dry signal to compensate for some shortcoming in the compressed signal.

I'm seriously impressed with this thing...

I had the first batch that came out and it was like that. No bad tone at all. I got tracking on one of the newer batch pedals! I'm excited about it too, best recording tool I used to date for that thick smooth bass tone. Great piece of gear!

Yeah, but I guess I'll try another one on my mini board. Maybe the new version has improved song memorization capabilities. Heh.

Just ordered.

Mini board will be: Sonicstomp -> Smoothie -> EBS Octabass -> BDDI, maybe a VTDI.

No bad tone? You should hear mine! Every time I play through it, intonation issues, plays behind the beat, sometimes forget the chorus repeats one time, then two times, then three times, that's a G not a C or a C not a G, no you really don't need glasses for the iPad music folio. Geesh, don't get me started on the thing!
LOL sorry about that, I guess we still have some bugs to iron out. :p

Received mine today. Haven't had a chance to test it out yet, but it looks amazing! Extremely well constructed.

Can't wait to get off work and put it through the paces.

Spent some time trying out the pedal. I definitely agree with everyone - the ability to blend dry & compressed signals is great. The compression is very musical to my ears and it definitely adds a little something to my sound. It really allows my Bass VI to shine in ways that I didn't think were possible.

One question - the Thresh switch doesn't seem to be cutting much of the input signal for me. Maybe this is because I'm using passive instruments?
