I have two P's. This one is my main bass, gets 95% of my playing time. It is a 1971, and I've had it for about 18 years now. Paid $395 for it at the time with the original hardshell case. Already had the EMG active pickup and BadAss bridge on it.

I also have what is supposed to be a `73. It has a 2000 replacment neck on it. I won't bore you with the long story I was given about his bass, let's just say that when I saw the silverburst finish with the tort pickguard, I had to have it! And, fwiw... the pickguard from my `71 above fits on it perfectly and all the screw holes line up....

Real interested as to how that giant humbucker sounds. (sorry if you answered already. I can't get through the entire way.)

Yeah, they did.

On the original single pickup P-Basses there was a foam strip under the bridge cover - which is why you see so many of those covers reversed so that the foam damper doesn't affect the strings vibrations.

When the split pickup P-Bass variation was introduced, the bridge cover had a similar foam strip on the underside.

On the Jazz basses, the original format had the mutes mounted as 4 individual foam sections on the body between the bridge and the bridge pickup. This was shortly changed to a simple foam strip under the bridge cover.

Here's some pics from the wonderful reference book: The Fender Bass
