Well it's definitely a beauty, no doubt about it. I'm sure it funks up a storm as is, though. And if you really want a foam mute, you can always do Carol Kaye's tacky looking felt strip method, or buy a sponge to stick under the strings. Good decision not to drill.

Just picked up this Highway 1 P bass last week. I've already changed the pickguard and pickup. It's currently got a Quarter Pounder but I plan to try several others and keep my favorite.

I have two P's. This one is my main bass, gets 95% of my playing time. It is a 1971, and I've had it for about 18 years now. Paid $395 for it at the time with the original hardshell case. Already had the EMG active pickup and BadAss bridge on it.

I also have what is supposed to be a `73. It has a 2000 replacment neck on it. I won't bore you with the long story I was given about his bass, let's just say that when I saw the silverburst finish with the tort pickguard, I had to have it! And, fwiw... the pickguard from my `71 above fits on it perfectly and all the screw holes line up....

Still trying to figure out what to do with the body. I plan on filling in the J route (I think), but if I do, I'm afraid that I'll have to get her finished in a solid color because the filled-in route would show through with a nartural or burst finish. I don't think solid colors were avail in '57, so it would not be very authentic in terms of finish. I could also just put a J pup in it for now. Hmmm, decisions, decisions...

I think Candy Apple Red and Black were intorduced either toward the end of '57 or on the 2nd production year.

if you can find a piece of ash with a similar grain to plug the J route then it would be very hard to spot beneth a 2 tone burst and even harder with a Mary Kaye white.

I have to go do some digging on the history on this so I can get mine reasonably right. Thanks for the info. Let me know if you come across any links that have to color info and what years they were introduced. Thanks!
