P Bass pickguards

Given the color of your bass body and it has a maple neck I always like a red tort guard look. I think black and red tort look good and really good with a maple neck but that just me. Personally I always liked white body and white pick guard, fret board color did not matter.

You might be surprised what you can do for a very low cost. My Blacktop Jazz came with a Black/White/Black pickguard and I had an idea to liven it up by ordering a Black/Red/Black guard from Warmoth. But without mailing it to them for an exact fit match, I'd be gambling with a fair amount of money. And even if I did mail it, it'd still be a bit expensive. But then, I had an idea…and it worked!

I simply attacked the white pinstripe with a red Sharpie permanent marker, let it dry for a few hours and then burnished off the excess with a clean paper towel. Obviously I took the guard off the body beforehand and kept the plastic film on until the job was done. Then I replaced the chrome guard screws with black ones…and violá! A wholly new pickguard that only cost me a handful of black screws, a little bit o' Sharpie ink and about fifteen minutes of my time.

I did the same with a P-Bass guard which will be going onto a build-project I'm working on, only this time I used a blue Sharpie. Get this…it unexpectedly took on a reflex blue/violet. In other words, it shifts from one to another depending on how the light hits it. Tres rad!

I know a lot of people love tortoise-shell guards. Personally, I love translucent (y'know…the proper kind) tort to the point that the non-translucent/photo-vinyl overlay type repels me. True tortoise-shell should have depth that lets a little light through, giving it a warm glow about it.

Something like this…

Now, if I could get a sheet of translucent tort cut into a pickguard, that'd be classy…especially if it's seen under bright stage lights where the depth would add it's subtle touch. But that's just my personal esthetic taste at work.

BLACK!!! Either B/W/B or single layer.
IMHO fits well with any body/fretboard color combination, in particular the one you have.
I have a 3-tone sunbirst/rosewood. Replaced the original tort with black. Much better!

Yesterday I became the proud owner of my very first P.
An almost new 2010 Am Std. It happens to be black/maple neck and came with a single layer black PG similar to the Roger Waters signature version.
I wasn't sure about the color combo at first but I have to say it's really growing on me...I LIKE IT!

I'm in the process of putting together a project Precision bass. The body on mine is black, and I'm trying to source a neck with a rosewood fingerboard. And I will absolutely be doing a tort guard on mine. IMHO, it's a great look.

This one isn't mine, but it's the look I'm going for:
