P bass stolen!

+ whatever on the police report. If not for yourself than for the other victims who might get redress if the guy is caught, and to held prevent further thefts.

Furthermore, what if the bass has been found already? Would you rather it be auctioned off by the police?

People complain about cops not finding theives or solving crimes, (nothing personal here, general comment) but they don't do enough themselves to help the cops do their jobs, or to collect realistic crime statistics that might end up in more resources allocated to solving crime.

NOW ...it`s f**king personal!!! :scowl: :scowl:

I`m so sorry for what happened,Bill.I can imagine how I would be feeling in that situation. Don`t go beating yourself up too much about the door thing,ok? Trust me on this,k? I`m a fellow "Bill" here and just like you was a long term rural resident who relocated to small city(in my case to be closer to my three daughters).

*sigh* It really is that bad out there. :atoz:

So I returned the Charcoal Frost Metallic P today, I'd had 30 days to return it, and tomorrow is Day 30. A week ago I was shipped and today received this:

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9706111&postcount=1

Plays like a dream, feels very natural in my hands, and has a very pleasing "grunt" in the low notes. Thanks to The Crusader for taking great care of this lovely beast and doing such a good job shipping it here! I'm looking forward to my next gig, which is coming up on Oct. 9th. I'm very surprised at the tone, I wasn't sure what to expect from an ash body on a P bass, but I am pleased! I A/B'd it versus the 2010 CFM P bass, which has flats (this one has rounds on it, so far), and the 2010 actually seemed brighter and "snappier." The '57 has a nice thump to it, and with the tone rolled on a bit, it has some bite that I really like.

I haven't posted my stolen bass in the forum here because I live in a backwater on the east coast of Canada - I doubt very much that it will turn up here, I don't know very many Nova Scotia-based bass players who are members of this forum. I also have not bothered reporting this to the police - I have serious doubts that they'll be able to do anything for me, especially a month after the fact. Yes, it makes me angry to no longer have it, and to have to fork over dough to get a new one, but I guess I am just fatalistic that way, or resigned. I'm a single dad with 75% custody of my two boys, a demanding job, and little to no free time - I just have not been able to justify the effort involved in talking to the police, on an effort/reward scale. Lessons learned, and my mistakes will not be repeated.

Thanks for your concern everyone, seriously, thank you. The main point of this thread was to get advice on a replacement, which I now have, happily.

Looks like your trials have led you to possibly a dream bass for you! Now enjoy it, but please file a report with the police. Then maybe your biggest problem will be choosing which bass to keep! :)

Good to hear you found a nice replacement, play it well.

Again, reporting it is as much for the benefit of others as for yourself. Take the 15 minutes and do the right thing, please. can you imagine how silly it would be if a thief got away with the crime or if the bass was found and had to be auctioned instead of returned to you?

Report it. Make a stink.

I've had a stolen bass come back to me this way, because the person would never have been able to sell it.

Cops should take care of the pawn shops, but if they don't, tell them. Tell the local and semi-local music stores, and local musicians. Make it nearly impossible for these guys to move it, so they're sitting on a hot item.

And for the love of all that is well and holy, JOT DOWN ALL YOUR SERIALS. Yes! k!

Best o' luck, bud. These experiences suck.

Nothing rustles my jimmies more than theft or other disrespect for people's property. The assholery that people conduct themselves with when they think they can get away with it really drives me nuts, as a strict follower of the 'golden rule'.

That's a real bummer man.

If there are music stores in your area, let them ALL know about your bass. Especially the description you just gave us (serial#, color, pickguard, strings, etc).
Go to Guitar Centers that might be remotely close - even up to 50+ miles (or maybe you can call them?) and report the bass. They do a check of every instrument they get in and see if its reported stolen before they buy it.

Pawn shops do this as well. So get the word out!!! Also keep an eye on Craigslist and Ebay. You might actually get the bass back. It has happened before.

Best of luck man.

I recently saw someone post on CL in South Florida, an American P bass for $550, I immediately became interested in the price tag alone so I called the gentlemen and he told me had received the bass as a gift and that he needed to "pay the rent". I asked him for the number of the original owner so I could ask some questions on the history of the instrument. Well the man starts to get irate that I would ask such questions about his bass, and hangs up the phone. I then get even more suspicious, and start searching the internet for stolen basses, and it turns out that the bass was stolen in Georgia after a show. I sent a message to the original owner and he was able to get the police involved, the man who stole the bass went to jail, and the guy got his bass back.

hope something similar happens to you...

Hey Bill,
Congrats on your "new" bass. I played one of those for a few years, and they are wonderful instruments. Sound exactly like a P should sound. Congrats!
Sorry about your loss. I'm sure these circumstances will really make you appreciate your new '57.

Ok, so everyone, and I mean *everyone* is telling me that I have to report this, so I just got off the phone with the police, and will be providing them with pictures and the serial number. The dispatcher with whom I spoke suggested that the school behind my house maybe has video surveillance... Guess I better stop peeing off my deck after midnight. :D

The serial, just FYI, is Z8000843. Black with black pickguard and maple neck.

Thanks all!
