P-bass with musicman wiring?

Hello guys,

With my P-bass/Musicman project:

Would it be possible to wire the Musicman in series with itself and still add the P-pups parallel?

My first attempts send the all the pups into "flimpsy/nasal tone" mode. (like when two single coils have one wired normal and the other reverse polarity)

Yes, you can wire a music man pickup in series.

If you are getting a thin tone, then you have the two coils electrically in phase, which is out of phase.

Are you getting a thin tone from the music man pickup when it's inn series? Or between both of them?

With the musician pickup, you have to reverse one of the coils. If it's then out of phase with the P bass, swap the hot and ground wires on one of the pickups.

I feel the thin tone is from all of the pickups. Run just the P-pups or just the MM and it's fuller. I used this wiring diagram:

Except on the MM pickup green & white are together, red is + black is -

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but by reversing do you mean I could solder the P pups black & white wires flipped? As in use the white as ground?

I don't want to speak for David, but think that is what he meant and, if so, agree with the suggestion.

Of course any time you use two pickups together there will be some phase cancellation, but usually that cuts the highs or mids, not the lows (unless one is wired backwards relative to the other).

Nice bass by the way. I just finished a MM/P/EB project and the MM is placed about the same way as yours. I wired my MM in series to help compensate for the lack of a preamp and for the bridgeward placement (a bit further back than the MM position).

If you decide you want more output or deeper tone from the MM you could go to series on that one.

With both of the basses in my avatar picture I tend to either use the middle or the far neck together with the bridge. Guess I'm not a big fan of the bridge/middle combo tone.

I think the best way to have a MusicMan pickup in a P-Bass is with a pickup switch knob (Full P or Full MM, nothing in between).

It would be a shame to ruin the P sound and you can still use the bass as a 2-in-1.
