P clone shell pink refinish project

Terrible setback this morning.

It is really windy and while I am doing the work in my garage I had a few doors cracked to let the fumes out.

Apparently the plastic covers I had put over the work bench came off and attached to the body after I had done a clear coat. It ruined all and I had to sand off all the clear coat and most of the pink and re-spray. I actually might have to order another can of shell pink from Re-ranch since I am almost out and I might need to put on more coats then I have left.

Totally sucks.

Naw the colors match fine the only real issue is the smoothness of the body paint. I resprayed a couple of coats yesterday and it looks decent. Not as good as it did before but I think the only time someone would notice is if they held the bass in the right light. I'll start up on some clear coats again today.

Awesome job!!

Why do you need to have more than 3 coats of clear? When painting cars I only use 3 to 4 layers of Clear. Is this process different when painting a bass?

I feel your pain with the clear coat issue you ran into. This last year My father and I repainted my 65 Chevy truck and we just sprayed a couple coats of clear over the fenders, hood, and tailgate (In an open garage). We were just about to spray the last coat of clear and a huge wind gust blew out of nowhere and got pollen in the clear which caused dimples thorughout the clear. Needless to say it took three days of heavy sanding to get the clear evened out.

Another time after finishing painting a motorcycle tank I pulled the tape off and it pulled up the paint all the way to the primer. (I am not sure if you are taping anything, but I would highly recommend pulling tape off while the Clear is still wet. If you let the clear dry, your tape becomes embedded in the clear.)

Painting can be very frustrating when starting out, but you will be very proud of your accomplishment once you are completed.

Good Luck!!!

crackerman, yeah, you need more then 3 or 4 layers of clear coat. Don't ask me why as it confuses me too. My wood floors only need 3 or 4, so why would a bass need more? Everything I read though says to put like almost 20 coats of clear on. I wonder if they are incorrect in their word choice and they mean 20 passes, which with 3-4 passes per coat would give you about 4-5 coats...hmmm....

^^^ Bass looks great except for that. Should have just left it unfinished.
