P guys, where do you set your tone knob?

I keep my tone knob rolled off a lot, especially when I play reggae, which I play a lot. But on Funk tunes I tend to run it wide open. But most of the time 7/8 off, or all the way. I just love how the tone sounds, it's perfect. I LOVE P BASSES!!

Varies quite a bit - if I want that "click" with a pick, I'll turn it all the way up.

If I want the most uncomplicated, rumbling fingerstyle sound obtainable, I go all the way off.

Often I'm somewhere in between, depending on how the strings/pickup/amp are behaving for a particular song.

(This is why I can't handle those G&Ls - the one simple tone control keeps me plenty occupied without having to worry about pickup selection / series-parallel / passive-active-active+treble boost plus a second tone knob. )

I normally have it all the way on and pluck near the bridge. For some things I want a more acoustic/upright tone, so I roll it all the way off and pluck near the neck.

For the longest time I would only play with it wide open or at about 80% on... for some reason it seemed unnatural to "roll away" that much tone. And then I wised up. Somewhere around 30 to 40% on really brings out an untouchable sweetness, especially when you hit those high notes.

Given, there's a huge variation depending on your pots and your tone cap. The stock electronics in my SX went from bright to dead in about the first tenth of a turn and didn't change much beyond that. Swapped in one of the Bayou Cables harnesses (with CTS pots and a mallory tone cap) and it was like night and day. Even tone all the way through the knob, infinitely more usable and sounds much better as a whole.

I like my all the way off for my fretted P, and either all the way up on my fretless, dependent upon if I want to sound fretless or fretted on the fretted.

I like mine rolled off to half. With an Orange Drop capacitor and flatwounds it sounds very nice to my ears.

The reality is that there's a 'sweetspot' on a Precision. They're all a little different and our ears are all a little different. But if you've had a P for any length of time, you KNOW where to find it. Just a few degrees in one direction or another and it's not quite right. For me it's the same 6/8ths or 7/8ths rolled back as some have noted...but never quite the same for different instruments or set ups.

i just sold my P but when i did have it and played it the tone knob was usually halfway or off completely.

i think g&l was smart when they left the tone knob off of the SB series.
