I don't set it anywhere - it is attached to the tone pot and it would make it hard to turn the shaft without the knob.

Mine is a '94 MIM, and it DOES have indicators. Actually they're the same white plastic knobs used on a Strat. When I bought it (a week ago) that was the first thing I was going to do was replace them with the regular knurled chrome knobs, but GC was out of them.

But after using the bass for the past week, I find they are helpful in setting the tone for different songs. I set it to where I like it, and remember where it is for each song. FWIW, most of the time I'm between 6.5 and 9.

I set my tone and volume about 3/4 on for both. I play fingerstyle over the pickup. That gives me some headroom to adjust things one way or the other if the need arises.

i usually have mine up all the way. it's not a polite tone and it's not particularly great sounding on it's own but when in a band context it fits.

I don't get you people who roll it ALL the way off. You lose your mids as well as your highs, and it sounds crap (to me)!

All the way up for me, then maybe back it off a tiny bit... But never all the way to mud city.

Hmmm.... Tip... there's a stop when it's reached it's max or min... the screw which holds the knob on the pot shaft is exactly half way.

When i swapped out the pots and wiring on my SX, the new pot-shafts didn't fit the old knobs. Since i was swapping out other stuff like the bridge and pickguard I took the opportunity to put Gibson style speed knobs on there as well. It might not be technically correct, but they look just as classic (look at John Lennon's Epiphone acoustic with speed knobs, for example, totally weird but totally cool), and the little numbers are actually pretty helpful, especially when you're in a rush.

It really depends. When I'm practicing at home, it's almost always rolled of all the way with dead roundwounds, get a really thumpy sound. But I find that at gigs, and in a band situation, I end up having it creep open.

abso! closed is where the meat is at- open her up and you get the potatoes. Things are just to brash and clacky when that thing opens up to far-the boom and punch replaced by shabloozy and kersplunck. My 2 cents
