P/J P Bass with Jazz Neck

If you get a chance, would you mind measuring it, either for me or the OP? This little "investigation" has hooked a piece of my attention, as they are wont to do, and it demands satisfaction!

But no rush of course. It's just a twist of intellectual curiosity!

No problem, they're both right behind me.... Aerodyne Precision is 1 5/8" at the nut, my '82 MIJ Squier Jazz is 1 1/2", so just 1/8" difference.

Yep! Sounds like standard/typical Precision width. Ah well, not what the OP is looking for.

Ah, I guess I'm used to the larger Precision necks - I got the Aerodyne because of its slim neck relative to previous basses I'd owned! All in all, I do prefer the Jazz neck width myself...

If you are somewhat handy you could easily build one. Basically all you would have to do is find a P/J with a P body and neck then swap out the neck for a Jazz width one. Then sell the P neck to recoup some of the cost. I did this one a couple of years ago. SX P/J bass that I used the body but changed the neck for a J neck. Also upgraded the pickups, wiring and bridge. Think I had about $250 in it total.

I second the SB-2. I used to two of them. The MFD pickups are louder than most active basses I've owned/tried.

If you're willing to boost your price up a little bit, you could find a Sadowsky Metro hybrid PJ that would end your search.

Yes, that's the Lakland I was considering. Unfortunately the local dealer, GuitarGuitar, have spoken to Lakland and it was a limited run and now sold out, so I can't get one .

With the suggested pickguard change (and perhaps bridge) I will consider the

I wanna say "Aerodyne Precision", but I'm not sure if they have Jazz-spec'd necks. I'll do some digging when I'm not on my phone.

Mine has a 1.625" nut width (42mm), so it's the smaller modern P size and not Jazz sized 1.5" (38mm).

I actually have a Squier P/J Affinity that I put EMG-GZRs in, then I took the neck off and put a neck from an older Squier P/J a buddy of mine gave me which happened to be a J neck. So I now have a P/J with a J neck. It worked out great for me.

It is kinda odd because the original neck that came on my P/J was a P neck. The neck that came on my buddys P/J was a J neck. And I know that that was a stock neck. So they do make some P/Js with J necks. Or you could simply try a Mighty Mite aftermarket neck. They are very nice, I have one on my P bass. But the tricky part may be trying to get the neck pocket and new neck to fit exactly. Which, IME at times, has been tricky with Squire stuff.

This is weird, but mine is exactly 1.5" and more importantly, feels the same as my MIM Jazz, so has a similar neck thickness and contour as well. These haven't been made in while and were non-export MIJ instruments so are relatively rare, at least in the US. OP might not be able to easlily find one.

For his needs, I would go with the Lakland 44-64 Custom.

Another option which comes up every so often in the Talkbass classifieds is a Fender California Special P Bass which has exactly the specs you're looking for - PJ pickups, P-Bass Body and Jazz neck. It was only made for a couple of years in the late 90's but I really liked it. It had the gold anodized pickguard but if that's not your thing you can always change it. All the parts are US but painting and some assembly in Mexico with final assembly in the US.

Another G&L vote from a very happy SB-2 owner. The USA SB-2 comes standard with a 1.5" nut width Jazz neck, which had a 12" fretboard radius for a long time but now comes standard with a 9.5" radius like Fenders. Regardless, if buying used you need to make sure it has the neck you want, because many USA G&L's are custom ordered with non-standard necks, and the standard necks sometimes change.

On G&L's site, the Tribute version is listed as having a 1.5" nut width like a Jazz, but I'm not sure that's always been true. The Tributes come with the same electronics as USA models, have excellent quality, and represent outstanding value. They aren't quite in the same league as the USA versions, but that's to be expected.

It's worth mentioning the Lakland 44-64 Custom PJ also has a 12 inch radius, which I personally prefer over 9.5. For a guy with smallish hands it is much easier to get around. The G&L necks are very nice with a polished wood feel as opposed to heavily lacquered like the Fenders that I was playing at GC on Friday.
