P/J P Bass with Jazz Neck

I found a few old posts through Google on this topic but, I never know whether it is better etiquette to re-open a zombie thread of start a new one; please forgive if I got it wrong.

I've recently started playing with a classic rock band and my Active Lakland 44-01 doesn't quite sound right. I'm thinking about upgrading the MK1 pre-amp and perhaps that would make a difference but the wife has given me permission for a 2nd bass and I'm thinking classic rock, needs a P Bass!

What I really want is a P/J, but due to having fairly small hands and a weak thumb (following dislocation) Precision necks are too big for me.

So my requirements are:

- P/J pups
- P bass body (or similar)
- Jazz neck (or similar)
- astheticly appealing
- budget £300 - £1000

I played a Lakland 44-62 custom (without the J) and it was great. I believe they've just released a P/J version in black which is top of my list but I wanted to know if anyone had tried one of these and if so what are they like?

I also tried the Duff Mckagan signature which was alright but the one I store had an issue with the j pick up so didn't really get to properly test it out.

The previous threads on this recommended a G&L SB-2, how do the necks compare to jazz basses or laklands? Unfortunately no where near has one I can try so would love to get any information on them you have.

Also, how good are the tribute versions of this bass? How do they compare to the higher priced models? If I can get something 1/2 decent at a lower cost wife would be happy :).

i also believe that the fender p bass specials have the same necks, is that the case? Any recommended MIM models?

The 1024 in vintage white looks pretty neat. I've always liked Yamaha; will have to play one to check the neck is comfortable. Luckily there seems to be a store in London.

I have the 2024X model. The neck feels like a chunky C to me, and it's weighty. Mine has a touch of neck dive which I find annoying but other than that it's a marvelous instrument.

Fender P bass Special MIM deluxe Has both P/J pickups a P body and a narrow 38mm at the nut Jazz neck. could be what your after.

I have one and I'm happy with it, I payed over the odds for mine a few years back they were a bit more money than today.
If anything the gold pick guard can put some off but its east to change to a tort if that's your thing you just use the gold one as a template for the extra hole to drill.
I have modded mine so that I can go passive with just the p pickup by clicking the volume pot down, the mod cost me £45 and is just a fail safe for if the battery dies mid gig.

Specs and info on the Aerodyne Precisions are a bit scant, but I found an old listing from Sweetwater. It has the neck as having a Jazz nut-width.

Sb-2 necks are not flat front to back, and between a 62 reissue and 70s style Jazz in nut width ime, really hot focused pickups, mine wears flats, I'd just get a used American one over a tribute, because you can get a deal on them, but they both have the same pickups and bridge

I second this, it is a great option. Very nice bass and that mod is smart.

The Zone that PeaveyPlayer mentioned is also a great bass. I had one and I regret getting rid of it.

If you get a chance, would you mind measuring it, either for me or the OP? This little "investigation" has hooked a piece of my attention, as they are wont to do, and it demands satisfaction! :hyper:

But no rush of course. It's just a twist of intellectual curiosity! ;)
