PA left on overnight??

I did some work in a church this weekend, and noticed that the sound system was left on and no one was going to be there until Sunday .. I called the contact # that I had, and the guy said it was 'no big deal', and that the youth group does that quite a bit, and I was to 'just leave it' ...

I noticed what looked like a Crown XLS series power amp under the counter, and a Behringer board, a couple wireless lights still on for the mics ... I am guessing the system may have been on 'standby', as none of the mics were hot on the stage, but what am I missing here?? .. this makes no sense, and I cant imagine they do this on a regular basis ...

Hi.

Some do that, some don't, but IMHO, it's not a good practise.

First of all, every el. appliance is a potential fire hazard (don't worry, I won't link to my "dust-bunny" amp thread ;)), so if left unattended, turn it off.

Secondly, if the system "hot" ie. the signal chain is open, any outside exitation will make the system feed back uncontrollably, and that will destroy the speakers in a couple of hours.

To me that's laziness attempting to be justified by incompetence. Sure, perhaps the probability of anything bad happening by leaving it on is very low (perhaps not!). What's the probability of anything bad happening if you take an extra five seconds out of your day to shut it off properly? I won't venture any further into the wasting energy concept than to state that it is just a ridiculous habit.

And it's not green. That one youth group has tipped the balance, and now the earth is doomed to become an inferno just like Venus. Gee, thanks, earth-hating youth group. :rolleyes:

The biggest concern might be more environmental. Firstly, they are not being very considerate in the waste of the Lord's gifted resources. Secondly, what type of building is this? It's a Church, right? What do Churches typically have? High roofs and or steeples, right?

What does lightening look for? The closest direct path to Earth ground. I make a good living in part thanks to Churches that don't turn their A/V systems down, take a strike or heavy power surge and boom goes the dynamite!

Turn it off after each use if there is more than an hour or two between uses. Be a friend to the Earth. I don't need more work, I'm really busy, turn your crap off!
