Has anyone ever done this? I know spray painting is obviously a bad idea. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Painting Grill Cloth?

So we can poke fun at you. Why not just reupholster it. It is cheap and easy with a simple staple gun.
I've seen some painted metal grills that looked pretty cool. Someone had a huge rig - like 2 or 3 8x10 cabs - with the grills painted to look like a brick wall with graffiti all over it. Some of the 'graffiti' spanned two of the cabs. I dug it.
Not sure about painting cloth though, it might not look good and might even dull the sound slightly. Maybe fabric dye?

Painting a metal grill will do just that - paint the grill and leave the holes open for sound to get through.
Painting grill cloth will most likely result in the paint clogging up the air holes, and will sound like putting a blanket over your speakers

If it's a fabric grill, spray paint may be a better option as it won't clog the material as much. (But of course, take the grill cloth off the cabinet first!)
Stain won't fill holes; paint will fill holes AND chip off almost immediately.
Replacing the fabric is a better idea. I've done business with NewFoam and they're good people: Link Removed. Audio parts firms also carry grille cloth.
