Regarding Chinese made instruments including but not limited to Gibson, Fender and Rickenbacker clones, be careful. It seems they don't understand the idea of a brand name. In a language that uses Hanzi rather than the Latin alphabet it is easy to mistake a group of letters for a design or emblem. There was a glut of horribly fake guitars with the Gibson logo on the headstock on the web a couple of years ago with the descriptions rambling on about the history of China. Not sure if it was a joke, a scam or what.

open glue seams everywhere, glue lines, visible filler, mineral streaks in the maple, poorly patched routs - hard pass.

Also: $299? that's a damn insult. I wouldn't give 50 bucks for it.

Body looks like stained pine. Definitely not Zebra wood. Could also be some type of hydro-dipping. Chinese junk.

First off, they are NOT clones, they are counterfeits. They understand brand names very well. That is why the copy items and put the brand name on it. They do this to try and put the actual company out of business. The only thing they do wrong is stuff like serial numbers. I've seen several Chinese Gibsons that say made in the USA and all have the same serial number. As for how I know this, they have done it to my brother's metal detector company. If he changes something on his detector to make it obvious that it is his, they have theirs changed within a week. They know exactly what they are doing.

If that was a p pickup instead of the jazz and something like flamed maple.. shoddy or not I'd pay $299! I would be more comfortable if it was a bolt on neck though

This 'brand' appears to be being sold out of California somewhere. Reminds me a bit like 'Kona' out of Texas. The headstock features a pair of dice so someone there appears to understand at least some English. Interesting that nothing appears on the back of the headstock ...not even a serial number.

I have to agree. The Zebra wood that I've seen, at least on ABG's looks more like this:

So I wonder what it really is since it has a 'Natural Matte Finish'? If it were Gloss or Satin it would be easy to seal it over, but a 'Matte Finish' I would think may leave it bare and easy to tell what it is like an oil or open pore finish?

Well, here we go...got it today delivered USPS in the bass box inside a gig bag.

Zebra wood or not? I don't know. I took off the cover plate on the back to have a look at the wood inside and if this is painted, then these Chinese went to great lengths to fake it with painted layers through the cut for the pots. Maybe it is simply some other wood?

Plugged in and this thing is really surprising with Vol/Blend/Treble/Bass.

The strings are very bright rounds. The Tuners are no name Gotoh style.

For $250 and very fast shipping from California I am very surprised. ...….and a decent gig bag.

After my offer was accepted I contacted the seller and made it clear I wanted one of the other basses they were selling with no visible glue joints. Looks like I got what I wanted.

That's wild. The wiring looks pretty tidy and it doesn't look half bad for the money. How's the fret work?

Not a sharp fret on it....very smooth all along either side of the neck. The back of the neck is satin smooth and quick. I am really surprised with this. Pups are quiet though when using the j pup by itself there's a little noise but not too noisy for a single coil, not like some others I've heard.

Looks like top and backside overlays on plywood, looking at the control cavity.

I don't thinks that's painted zebrawood, I'm guessing it's a laminate made with rough layers of something and then cut on an angle to give it a more random look than normal plywood. If you look in the control cavity you can see the layers lining up and I'd bet if we can see the butt end it would be straight grain and not curved like something from a tree.

Looks like they had never seen a battery before they routed the battery box compartment the first time.

I would avoid this bass. It looks like super cheap, generic hardware. The wood grain is weirdly one dimensional, the routing is dodgy and the opening glue line in the cutaway is a worry. This won't be a nicely finished off instrument.
