Double Bass Palatino Megathread part I

The only difference is the cable is braded not solid. It is also covered with heat shrink tubing. I had a buzz on my ES9 Englehardt and replaces it with aircraft cable and fixed it right up. The wire that I replaced was solid formed wire. Braded wire is a known practice on acoustic basses so this should be fine on the Palatino. If not I have a couple of nylon tailpiece holders in stock here.

That's what this is all about, trying different ideas and finding out the end results, the sounds , the sustain, the playability, through different people with on hand resources, just like yourself who had a spare tail piece and various cords and wires. If one person had to source all the items and try them all it could take another year or more to get the reults we are hoping for.
The web site bellow is what caught my eye, and it comes off the page on the Talkbass site when you click on the Double Bass page, if when you're on the below site and then click on his "Wood" button he has a variety of Tails, his testimonial button is also interesting.

I went to my stock of parts and found the tailstock was a little large so I bought a new one with more style for my ES9 Swingmaster and at the same time got the who cares feeling and ordered the King Studio King in Butterscotch. Oh well what can I do?
As soon as I can swap it out I will tell you sll what I think.
I did turn my Palatino over on the peg head last night and played it to see if my tailstock buzzed. It did but not much. I dampened it with my hand and it did make a difference.- Doug

Has anyone tried any alternate tunings with this bass? I detuned my E string down to C# so I could play Flight of the Cosmic Hippo by the Flecktones, but it sounded surprisingly good. Right now I'm playing it tuned a whole step lower than normal (DGCF). My teacher loves the way it sounds like this. I just didn't know if anyone else had tried this.

A question about the stock pickup and its legendary "hiss".

I own the Palatino VE-500 and I can attest to the hiss factor when one attenuates the sound with more Treble, or raise the on-bass gain/volume knob.

Until now, I've dealt with this issue slightly by raising the gain and volume on my amp, and only raising the stock pickups' volume as necessary (to reduce the signal and accompanying hiss from the stock pickup). However, if I want to really get very treblish, the signal to the amp is weak and cannot get a lot of volume.

After having similar "hiss" problems with my two Ibanez electric basses, I set out to search out ways to mute the hiss on my electric basses.

On this very site, there is a conversation about "shielding" the control and pickup cavities with copper foil as a way to make the basses quiet. Here it is - http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=159191&highlight=shield

Could it be that if we "shield" the pickup and control cavities in the Palatino VE-500 with copper foil, we can eliminate the hiss from the stock pickup and make the stock pickup a usable pickup? I'd rather solve the hiss problem that way, rather than shell out $150.00 or more for a Fishman Full Circle or a Realist pickup.

Anybody tried this modification to the Palatino VE-500?

I have no problem wrapping a little extra but there seems to be about an extra foot. With the thickness of the E string I am afraid there will not be enough room. Once I cut off the excess there is no returning them. Did you use the 3/4 size?

Yes it was the 3/4 size set. Try taking one of the old string and compairing the lengths to each other. Also hold the E string over the E string on the bass. I think you will find the end of the windings is just at the edge of the tuner spool. If it is way longer cut the new ones to the same length but be really carefully you don't shorten it to much.

I had the same problem with my bass, but after I cut most of the wound stuff at the top of the string, I found that they actually DID fit. Also, the first set of strings I bought (which I later returned) were wound too widely at the bottom to fit through the upper set of holes in the tailpiece.

Before I replyed again I just went to the music room and checked to Palatino. The E string is wraped about 2 1/2 recolutions beyond the playing windings. In fact all the tuners have some amount of finished winding around them accept for the D string. I then checked the other basses and they were all the same. So don't worry you will be fine- Doug

Took my Palatino to practice tonight and everyone really liked it. We were practicing on a tile floor and bass kept sliding around. So, we flipped the bass over, pulled the "end pin" all the way out and turned it around with the big rubber end on the floor now. Any reason why I shouldn't have done that?

Link Removed There is nothing wrong with this at all. Here are a couple of other ideas. I added the end pin ball by removing the nylon point in the end and machining a piece of aluminum to press fit in the tube and a 10MM shaft on the end to fit the end pin ball. You can also get rubber chair legs to fit over the end." Get white" Either file off the point or stick a penny in the cap to keep the point from wearing through the cup.

I did that when I first got my bass, the only thing that's bad about it is that the endpin pipe will start to cut through the rubber and you'll have to replace it soon. Personally, if I were to use it, I would take the rubber cap off that end of the pipe and put it on the end with the point (after dulling the point a little).
