Hi,

I Live in Canada, I want to know if you buy a palatio VE-500 From ebay. If yes, it is possible to know the total price with transport and duty taxes you pay for this EUB.

I've been wanting to get an EUB for a long while, but local shops don't stock many, and the ones they do have are all in the upper end of the price range (Vektor, Zeta, NS). The Palatino seems like a good choice for the bass guitar player wanting to transition to EUB for not a lot of cash.

If there are any Canadian users, I'd like to hear who they ordered their Palatino from, and if there were any issues w/ customs etc.

Until then, more reviews, more mods, and more pics please. :hyper:

Well....thats the question. I wanna take out the stock pre amp-leave the piezo p/up in & operating, & use a fishman Platinum+ EQ preamp. But when I look inside the Palatino( U R right -I'm No tech, but I can do minor repairs & have istalled p/ups, pots etc on my elec. basses) I cannot work out how to take out the preamp without affecting the piezo p/up already in it-which I wanna leave working!
Anyone?????????????????

You can take the preamp/volume controls with a screwdriver and the pickup unplugs by way of a mini phone jack. My thought is why put in a good preamp and leave the stock pickup in when you can replace it with something better like a rev solo or bassmax or anything else for that matter. Remember the stock pickup wire goes through a hole in the pickup mount. The connection to the pickup element is weak so be careful. ( OR ou could just rip it out and get a better pickup. ) Good Luck.

I'm cleaning out the shop and if anyone needs any of the stock "stuff" for their VE500 let me know. I have the bridge, preamp with V and T, the wiring for the headphone jack, the strings and the battery holder etc. I still have what's left of the pickup. The whole batch for $20 plus shipping. Let me know.

Thanx for the reply Bassbob. I did take out the V & T plate-pre/controls, but I think the pick up is joined by a small white plastic '2 wire plug' -no mini phone jack in mine. in re- to U suggesting a rev solo, or bass max-where do I get these? Aus. IS a different place..... by far ;-). Thought I'd start with replacing the pre-or just getting rid of the stock one- & was wondering how to take it out, while still having the stock p/up going? Help? Please!!!!!

What Francois says-check out Upton and Bob G. They have the stuff you need and I'm sure they can ship all the way to down under.

Your other option is to check the classifieds on various web sites and buy used. Ebay is another alternative or whatever version of Craigslist you have down under.

As for the stock VE 500 pickup it does plug in ( at least in the one I have ) /the plug is a "micro phone plug " ) Anyway, get rid of that along with the preamp and you are better off.

The replacement stuff and getting it to you is the biggest issue. Good Luck.

Thanx again BAssBob. What I'm getting at ATM is-1. I can't afford another item ATM, So I wanna take out the Pre. My p/up plugs in with a li'l white 2 wire conector-like U find in computers- But CAN i plug the Stock p/up 'straight thu' - so that I can plug the bass in thru the reg. 1/4" jack input, & have the stock p/up working??? THATS my $64 question. I'm a bit stumped on HOW to do this... When I've looked I've seen the p/ups connector, but the 1/4" input looks to be "hard"wired into the stock pre????? Any help here would be GREATLY appreciated!

I use the Rev Solo because I have a few I've picked up here and there and I like the simplicity of the design and of course the sound. If you look at one of my earlier posts #439 ( my visual schematic ) That was one attempt at using the stock preamp with the Rev Solo. It didn't work to well due to the amount of hum and hiss generated by the stock preamp.

You can see where I substituted a 1/4 jack for the pickup to plug into the the preamp circuit. If your other pickup has some kind of USB plug I don't know how you would work with that. I'm still into old style point to point soldering with most of the mods I do.

As far the Rev solo goes it's the old model #1 which is slightly obsolete now that the Rev Solo #2 is in production. I don't know if Rev Solo #1's are made anymore. But like Francois says everybody has a different take on sound. Strings, pickups, bridges etc are as individual as anything else. Can you post a picture of the pickup you want to use? I'd also recommend trying a K and K style preamp or the tech 21 sans amp preamp for the VE500.

Also, at some point the cost of various mods may outweigh the benefits of the sound quailty. ( I'm still way under the MSRP cost since I bought my VE500 from a damaged freight warehouse. ) If i had the money I'd probably get an Eminence or some other high end EUB.

I also sold most of the left over stock stuff to someone in town last night so I now can work on some other mods. :hyper:

Thanx again Bassbob, I mentioned earlier that I already had & am using the Fishman Platinum+ EQ preamp. So I wanted to take out the Stock pre from the Palatino. So 1st I'd like to try the Fishman with the stock p/up, then depending on results there I'll see re a new p/up such as the rev solo etc. Thanx I'll have a look at yr post U mentioned.

Bassbob- I just saw yr pics-post 439- mine has the same battery connector as yrs a white plug thing. But CAN I go from the stock pick up (obviusly having to use the battery) to the input 1/4" jack? Thats all I wanna do! Sorry I'm NO tech, but I can solder OK! Couldn't provide me with a step by step on how I'd do this could U :-( sorry I'm a bit daft as far as elecs go & I don't wanna do something that makes anything worse! I gig with the Palatino 1-2 x per week!

Rod,

The stock pickup has a shielded cord which ends in a micro phone plug which plugs into a micro phone jack on the stock preamp. You can trace the cord coming from the pickep and the connection should be covered in gray plastic or rubber.

You'll have to modify the input on the fishman and/or the plug from the pickup to 1/4 " or RCA jacks or mni phone jack-plugs. ( these will be a little bigger than the plug/jack currently on the preamp/pickup. ) You could also just splice the wires directly between the pickup and preamp.

Try to post a pic and then we can see what you are doing.

Thanx VERY much Bassbob, I realize I'm askin a LOT here but I just didn't want to go yanking things outta there without knowing just what I'm yanking ;-) . Will give this a go ASAP & will get back 2 y'all.
The only thing different AFAIK is that I THINK my input wires are hard wired into the preamp- I'll-of course-have another look, but I'm pretty sure I saw a grey wire going straight into the pre from the input. The p/up wires are joined with a white plug-like yrs in yr pic. but will have to dbl check my one.

Yes it does work very nicely with the Palatino. It has a deep rich sound direct unto my amp-Acoustic Image. With the SansAmp Para Driver I can get very close to an acoustic bass sound plus I can drive lots of volume and get no distortion from the set up. The only problem you may have is fitting it into the stock bridge of the Palatino. If it doesn't then fit a shim of maple or any hard wood into the bridge to wedge the pickup in place.
I still use the stock stuff that came with the Palatino. I must have been real lucky since I have none of the troubles that have been discussed here.
