Double Bass Palatino Megathread part II

So my tailpiece snapped the other day
. I did some experimenting and kept on detuning and tuning the strings while setting up the bridge height, when finally with every tuning-turn I heard ''tunk, tunk, tunk tunk tunk'' and the tailpiece snapped. Did this happen to anybody else? I don't have any warranty because I bought it used so I have to figure out something else. I've seen some pictures where people drilled this round adapter on the bottom and restrung the stringholder-block with a tailgut. Can I use this tailgut for that?

I'm not quite sure it will fit in the existing holes of the stringholderpiece.
On my Harley Benton version (the european version of the VE550), it's located on the metal plate where the tone and volume knob are.
Cool thread(s). I bought my Palatino (VE500) used, but like new, about 5 years ago. It was sort of an impulse buy while cruising through a guitar trade show. I never played upright before. I knew when I bought it there would be needed upgrades. I never got around to doing any of it and sadly it became more like furniture. Well, it's time to make this thing a player. Thanks for all the great info here.
The electronics are total crap. Think I'll get the Bass Max pickup. I'd want to run this through my TC BG250-115 combo. So, I don't think a pre-amp is needed. I'll change the strings since they're still the stock ones on there. I'd want to play blues, jazz, country, and rockabilly. D'Addario Helicore hybrids seem to be a common recommendation. Any other suggestions are welcome. You guys have done some bridge and tailpiece mods I'd like to explore as well. What else should I do? Change the tuners maybe? Get a new bridge?

Right on TJ! Get that puppy up and running! They are a blast. I'm still learning to play UB, and I'm glad for the features of my Palatino/Harley-Benton.
Have you tried playing it as is? I don't find my electronics to be all that bad. Not the absolute best, but not bad, either. I do, however, want to swap out the string to Helicor Hybrids.
Gotcha. Well, if you have the time and patience, there is a lot of info in the two Palatino megathreads. there was also a thread started with all the modifications people did in one place. Also,
there are quite a few vids on youtube of mod's to the palatino. check those out as well.
I'm wanting to get an unamplified upright tone out of my Palatino.I have done the pickup mods (rubber under the bridge and pickup) and it has helped.I wonder if the p/u into an out board preamp might be the answer? What about an acoustic emulator pedal? The stock p/u sounds pretty good Arco.I don't think the bridge adjusters are needed and this might help the sound.Appreciate any comments
I would like to keep the stock pickup .Has any one had any success with acoustic simulator pedals or reverbs.I'd like to achieve a more upright unamplified tone .I am getting a too electric tone now pizz actually arco is not bad.My backup pickup is Underwood bad Arco electric tone pizz on the Pally.
Have you tied the mod of placing inner tube rubber under the feet of the bridge?
I used the stuff you use on the dash of your car to stop things from sliding around,I wonder if the inner tube would be better?Yes the mod really made a difference.What are your thoughts on the metal bridge adjusters?Any experience with acoustic simulator pedals?Thanks.
I'm new to the Palatino and to any type of upright bass in general. Any info I've gotten is from these mega threads.
But I'll be happy to share any experience I do have.
Regarding the adjusters, I have just recently been messing with mine a bit because I have raised the action so that I
can try slapping. The adjusters worked well, although I notice you can raise the bridge without removing it from the
bass by turning the adjusters, but to lower it again you have to remove it from the bass and spin the bridge feet so
that it gets shorter again. I don't know if that's how it works on all basses.

I use Tc electronic's Hall of fame mini reverb pedal to add some air to it! Works great!
I also put a little bit of reverb to my solid body EUB (Clevinger). Just put as much that you don' t recognize it as a reverb and take a smaller room, not a large hall type. Then you might play with the high EQ of the reverb feedback loop if you have such an option (and possibly eliminate or damp the lower frequency feedback).

Hey all, just joined the forum. I've had my Palatino for 10 months now, and after fixing the obvious flaws (that tailpiece especially!) I'm quite enjoying it. I'm now keen on a few mods as it will get a bit more live and studio work next year.
I have a Custom Guitar Workshop 6 string too, which I'm about to do a preamp upgrade on. This will give me a "spare" active preamp with 3 band tone control. I'm keen to transplant this into the Palatino along with some regular bass coil pickups. The pre has pickup balance, so I'm sure it will give me a lot more tone to experiment with. Has anyone put electric pickups on their Palatino? If so, where's the best place to mount them and what problems am I setting myself up for?

The guitar tone controls won't work well on a bass instrument because of different frequency ranges.
Good point DoubleMIDII have a tailpiece issue with a Palatino I'm wondering someone can help me with. I can't get the strings tuned all the way before the tailpiece, which is attached simply to a metal claw/clamp on the bottom of the bass, just pops off the clamp. Anybody else have this issue? How do I fix this? Keeping the existing clamp, which looks very cheap to me, doesn't seem like a workable solution.
