Old Dimarzio northern ash jazz body routed out for a PJ configuration by the pros over at Strange Guitarworks (Strange Guitarworks - Guitar Repair / Setup / Fretwork / Customization / Instruction). Dimarzio area PJ pickups. They did the routing, wiring, and set it up beautifully.

Neck from an MIM precision special. Basically a jazz neck with a precision decal.

This thing is more Dimarzio than Fender!

My Franken P is in the shop. Literally. It's in a friend's car shop getting painted black. Will pair that body with an allparts maple/maple jazz neck that I'm finishing in tru oil and Geezers.

I can't afford the basses I want, but I can scrounge around and bolt stuff together!

"Guilt-Free Squier Jazz-V"

• Black Squier Affinity Jazz-V body (boring white pickguard removed and a small amount of black Sharpie ink to "stealth out" the screw holes)
• Squier Vintage Modified '70s Jazz-V neck (all-maple with black binding and blocks)
• Current Strings: Ernie Ball Slinkys (E through G-strings), DR Black Beauty (B-string)

Note: Fivers are not my normal cup o' tea. I keep going at the B-string thinking it's the E-string. So, to try give myself a bit of a "visual crutch", I got a single Black Beauty for the B-string. The cool thing is, it actually helps! Now, I have a surprisingly decent fiver (I really, really lucked out with the quality of the neck and body!) that cost so very little that I don't have to feel guilty if it goes untouched for weeks on end.

I keep thinking that instead of hunting around for the "perfect" P Bass I should just build one out of some cool parts.

Ha! I forgot I'd written ^^^that ~5 years ago. In the interim, that's exactly what I did:

Warmoth Swamp Ash body with gloss tobacco-burst finish
Warmoth quartersawn Brazilian Ebony neck with Brazilian Ebony fingerboard and stainless-steel frets

I put this together at the start of the pandemic, and it's become my number one. Galactic Purple Squier Precision Standard body, Warmoth roasted maple and unlined ebony Jazz neck, DiMarzio Model PJ pickups, and Hipshot Ultralight tuners with eXtender. I built this in lieu of buying a Tony Franklin signature, so I set it up with master volume and tone plus 3-way switch to match that bass and see how I like it. Works fine for my needs so far. Anyway, I love this bass!

Here's my stable of parts basses:

2007 Highway 1 jazz body, fralin pickups and Warmoth neck. I actually bought this one like this.

2003 Highway 1 p bass body and 2018 American pro jazz neck. Pickup is a Lawrence p46. This is probably my favorite and number 1 bass.

And this should count! It's an Epiphone vintage Pro body (factory second) that I bought as a "husk". eBay wiring harness, and EY guitars Thunderbird pickups. Also some no name tuners.

My number one bass is a '77 P with about the same era DiMarzio pups. And I have a couple other basses and have rotated in some fretless and Vs but no love. And was thinking, I'd be nice to have Jazz.

Two years ago a guy was selling a MIM Jazz neck for $100, so with no real plan I snagged that. Add a set of anonymous open back clover tuners. And then hunting periodically for a body, but no real urgency.

Then a couple weeks ago I'm looking at a Fender husk body on FB, but a little tough to sync up with the seller. And another J body pops up Squier '70s CV maple natural fully loaded for $100. Pretty. Am I lazy or patient? IDK but lucky.

I got home from the sale and the neck and body fit hand in glove. Could not wait to put it together right then. Added a very thin shim, and I'm in business. Loving the funk and slap, and using now for fusion and country.
