Patitucci on a Sadowsky Playing Jamerson

My view is based on actually owning the video in question bought when it first came out! Played through an audiophile system. After listening again, it just could have been Weckl sucking the life out of what 'could have been' a Motown-esque demonstration! Having said that, the result was not Motown-esque or Motown-ish at all! R&B-ish maybe!

I just realized this is in basses.

Therefore, Is the point of this thread "Does this sound motown"
No.

It's about him playing the Sadowsky. NOT about how he plays it.
Keep on topic guys.

Cool!

Again, does anyone know anything about the Sadowsky Patitucci plays in this video?

Is that a rosewood fingerboard? Does it have an alder body? Are the pickups Sadowsky? Or are they from an earlier era and are EMG or Bartolini?

So, what are you exactly saying here then? You're implying, since the video quality isnt so good, you cant make proper judgment of the said video clip. Your reason for not being able to make proper evaluation is based on crappy youtube quality. Crappy quality or not, John pattitucci failed to deliver the Jamerson feel. So watching a jamerson clip on youtube would also result in losing that 'magic'. Your 35 years of playing experienece is irrelevant to logic. Video being out of sync has no effect on the sound clip, nor does bad sound quality have any effect on 'groove'. Unless the sound clip fluctuates in speed and volume. Again, youtube quality can't be much worse than casette, vhs or vinyl from the 80s.

You're implying a piece of music can only be appreciated if it's played on a hi fideliy system. Good music is still good, even on lo fi.

Ok I'm going to try one more time to convey my position. I have no problem with anyone saying this isn't a Jamerson style groove and I have not said that I did.

Some posters have made comments on the bass tone that JP gets on this video. I'm merely pointing out that IMO it's difficult to make definitive judgements of tone based on a poor quality copy.

I'm not implying anything like you state and of course music can be enjoyed on less than hi-fi equipment. However it wouldn't be fair to judge the sound quality or tonal aspects of said music on a small radio again IMO.

With regard to my comments about timing I wasn't talking about the groove here either. I feel, and again this is my own opinion. that when watching a video where the sound and video do not synch quite properly I find the visual distraction upsets the timing to me. Like watching a film sometimes where the speech is slightly off synch with the actors mouths on screen, I personally, repeat I personally, find this ruins the flow of the dialogue.

Those were my reasons for posting.

So I'm not backing out of my words, I think that the problem here is that even though I didn't support or oppose the "tsk tsk, he got a Jamerson style groove wrong" cause you have construed my posts in another way that was not my intention. I have not and am not intending to offer an opinion as to whether this is an authentic Jamerson style groove as it's of no real concern to me .

People are very quick to judge, especially when it's a subject dear to their heart.

I'm quite happy for our opinions to differ on this matter and as far as I'm concerned I have nothing further to offer on this subject.

Cheers :)

Oh fer cryin out loud! Did you guys even listen to what the man said on the video? Sheesh. He said Jamerson was one of his influences. Not I'm going to play exactly like Jamerson. He tried to give an example of a simplified... I repeat simplified! Motown-ish type of groove. You know Mowtown-ish? Rock-ish? Spanglish? Funk-ish? It's the type of phrase you use, when you want to be in the same zip code? as something but not actually want to BE that something? Watch the video and try to actualy understand what the man was trying to convey. There are plenty of clone videos out there for you to pick apart. You know the ones that are like "Heylookyme I can play __'s stuff better than than anyone!

If it was remotely Motown-ish in the tiniest way I wouldn't have made a comment.

It's not the end of the world, but if he was demonstrating a pumping metal riff and he played a groovy vamp I would think he had failed at demonstrating what he had set out to do, as well. It is an instruction video.

When you know better, it's the "Cognitive Dissonance" that one feels when listening to that video that's overwhelming. :D

I believe the bass is alder w/ a flame maple top, Ebony board, EMG Jazz pickups and the sadowsky pre.
