Patitucci on a Sadowsky Playing Jamerson

Wow, TOUGH CROWD!

Maybe you guys will dig this more?
I don't think anyone is doubting JP's skills at all. Just his 'idea' of what a Motown groove is. That example was clearly not a Motown groove, IMHO! John can definitely play though. I have pretty much all his cd's (& all the Electrik Band cd's) so my opinion is definitely an experienced one. And while he can get funky at times, he's definitely NOT a funk bassist! Most of his slap lines are preconceived with little variation!

I didn't see doubt of his funkness, I saw reactions to that particular clip. At best it might pass for post-Jamerson Motown but even then that period wasn't that rigid.

It's like people trying to cop Rocco Prestia's or Paul Jackson's vibe. I still don't know exactly how to do it myself... but I know when it's right and more important, when it's not.

For example, how often do you hear Jamerson lay on the one with the same note?
:hmm:

The bass sounds great not a fan of the drummers style though..he sounds like a cheesy drum machine. Great bass tone though

haha...that's funny...

he's just laying down a simple recording-style groove...
it's a bass teaching DVD! yes, it sounds cheesy, it's supposed to.

the drummer, BTW, is the GREAT Dave Weckl...and when he's cookin' there are only about 3 drummers in the world that can match him for style and technique...

CHECK IT OUT!

Billy Cobham and Omar Hakim come to mind (I'll have to dig deep to find a third)

:)

The great Dave Weckl simply doesn't float everyone's boat. I have a couple of his cds and other than some work I've heard him do with Anthony Jackson, he just sounds way too mechanical to me. He has serious skills but serious skills aren't everything.
:)

I can think of a bunch of drummers I'd rank up there with him, for different reasons, as far as what I'd want to listen to or play with.

+1. Nobody says his pure time and chops aren't amazing.

I will again, if you don't mind, post my favorite Weckl description (I forgot who gets the credit):

'Dave Weckl makes 4 sound like 5, and Vinnie Calaiuta makes 5 sound like 4:D'

If you have listened to Weckl in the past 3-4 years you would hear a HUGE change in his playing - much looser and world music influenced.

Although I have a couple of other drummers that I prefer - you can't get away from the fact that he has played and is playing with the best musicians out there. If I ever get to that level I'll criticize his playing.
