The playing is nice but not mind blowing. It is just interesting to see JP back in the day on a early generation Sadowsky. The bass sounds great, btw.

Patitucci on a Sadowsky Playing Jamerson

The playing is nice but not mind blowing. It is just interesting to see JP back in the day on a early generation Sadowsky. The bass sounds great, btw.
Wow, that was so un-Motown like! And so un-Jamerson sounding. I guess they couldn't do an actual Motown groove due to copyright infringement since they were selling this video. Patitucci is still a really good player though!
Note the subtitle on the video, he's not playing like James Jamerson, it's James Jaimerson. Must be a different person.

The first time I ever saw John P. play bass was in St. Louis years ago when he was touring with David Sanborn. It was in the early 80's if I remember correctly, and he was thumpin' all those Marcus Miller lines on a 4 string J type instrument (not sure what brand). He sounded good. It was quite a shock to see him a couple of years later playing a 6 string Smith with Chick!

On the first Electrik Band album I heard John playing on I much prefered the sound of his jazz bass to his Ken Smith sound!
Ditto. Much like Stanly, I prefer John on upright. His electric bass guitar tone is way too bright for my taste.
Meh. Didin't do much for me. Sounded like a "Motown-esque" canned backing track. Bass tone is okay, but not at all like JJ.
Tone aside, I just thought the playing was flat and stiff. John isn't the man for groove imo. It had none of the juicy, funky feel that Jamerson had. However, I'll throw my hat in saying I much prefer the sound of jazz basses overall compared to P's.

You can't get Jamerson "tone" with a Sadowsky Jazz.

Yeah, it's the same with the other examples John gives in that video: Paul Jackson, Chuck Rainey, etc. The intent is great but the tone and feel is not.
I don't mean to bag on John, because I love his playing on his own records. It's just because he's so great on everything else that this falls short.
Instructional indeed, as it shows how much groove and feel (or the lack thereof) can make or break a certain kind of bassline. I also hate to rag on others' playing but this is really disappointing. There are so many approaches to making a line swing without necessarily copying Jamerson's style, but this manages to miss them all.
I like JP's tone on that clip. It is not appropriate for the Jamerson feel, but it is a nice, active Jazz sound, IMO.

i think JP's version is ok tho. i mean, cmon, he's trying to cop jamerson!
but one of the better jamerson lines i've heard on an instructional tape is definitely jerry barnes' rendition on his funk licks tape:
and i still play that lick! actually, this is THE video that got me started on bass all those years ago. well worth picking up.
I love Patitucci in a jazz/fusion context, but that Motown thing is not happening, IMHO. Mainly his town is too twangy because of the light roundwounds and low action, and Weckl's drumming is not helping either -- too rigid and little groove. Again, IMHO and as someone who has coped a few of Patitucci's lines.
