The great Dave Weckl simply doesn't float everyone's boat. I have a couple of his cds and other than some work I've heard him do with Anthony Jackson, he just sounds way too mechanical to me. He has serious skills but serious skills aren't everything.
I can think of a bunch of drummers I'd rank up there with him, for different reasons, as far as what I'd want to listen to or play with.
interesting comments...I sorta understand where you're coming from, although I have seen Dave play more fluid...but none as fluid as an Omar Hakim, for instance...
ironically, as a bassist, I find John Pattitucci to be very much in that "mechanical" vein of performers...I aspire to be a more "rubbery" player like a Tal Wilkenfeld.



I still put it on just to listen to the grooves! I wish they would release it on DVD.
