Very nice....I like JP alot! BUT - Jameson on a J? something sacrilegious there!
He's playing it kind of groovy and slow as a teaching technique IMO.
Plus...the video was done in the 80's? There was a point back then when (although I can't speak for everyone) most bassists were trying to obtain that modern tone. It was really a big thing until the mid to late 90's brought back the vintage vibe and warmth.
Not even close IMO. The speed wasn't the issue.
It was supposed to be a demo from another period. Even if he played it on a Ric with Rotosounds, the note placement and groove had practically nothing in common with the subject.

He was playing a ( french ) LAG Bass back thenI remember that instructional video from John. It's actually pretty good. Man, can Weckl suck the groove out of everything or whatThat is about as 'funk-less' as anything could ever be played
The first time I ever saw John P. play bass was in St. Louis years ago when he was touring with David Sanborn. It was in the early 80's if I remember correctly, and he was thumpin' all those Marcus Miller lines on a 4 string J type instrument (not sure what brand). He sounded good. It was quite a shock to see him a couple of years later playing a 6 string Smith with Chick!
oh wow![]()
IMO, his Jamerson is not bad at all. Yes James had way more complicated lines, but if you look at mowtown as a period, that style he demonstrated is way common. Including his time. Kids today are into way behind the beat, so far I have to sit down cause my head hurts sometimes. Way behind is sloppy to me. If you want behind the beat, just hit just a millisecond or so afer the snare...thats it. Anymore and youre in jadakissland or whomever...its okay, just too loose for me.
I play old school lines and ice cream changes all day long for money with old cats from the hood and south side of Chicago...I HAVE to have it right.
The pocket is a pocket because thats where the note fits in, that little pocket.
I kid , I kid.....jerry said:I really don't get the whole you need a P-bass-with-flats
