I always thought that it had to do with how advanced theory you apply in your music. If someone is playing all powerchords it is less advanced than someone playing a fugue. And it doesn't matter how fast he plays thoose chords, the fugue is more advanced (as an example).
But that's just theory. I don't believe that complexity and advanced theory make the music advanced, they just make it complex. And music being complex doesn't make it good.
Well here are a song from each band, you should check them out to gain better understanding of my views :

Ok, I've just had a listen. I got almost half way through the Burzum song, and I'm listening to the Immolation one now.
Uh, what was that you were saying about power chords?!? Cuz power chords is exactly what I'm hearing a lot of here. Sorry, but this music isn't what I call advanced, even from a purely theoretical perspective. That Burzum song, I turned off halfway through because I was too bored with that power-chord riff, which was pretty darn simple. And, this Immolation one (which I've just turned off, having gotten most of the way through - because I got really bored with it - plus, this
really isn't the sort of music I like to listen to). It sounds like it's trying to be complicated, but it doesn't sound like it's doing anything advanced in any kind of a musical way, to me. In fact it's very repetitive. And, uh, do either of these songs have a melody? I'm hearing a lot of noise, but none of this is speaking to me as music. What do you call this style? Metal?
I don't get your perspective when you say this stuff is advanced. From where I'm standing, The Beatles work on say, "Abbey Road" is *way* more advanced than this appears to be.
Yes, The categorie with beatles are bands who provide good entertainment but lack in depth. The second categorie is bands/composers that provide more emotional depth but have less entertainment value.
There you go with "my perceptions are fact" again. Is it not possible that The Beatles' music does have emotional depth, but it's just not on your wavelength?
Its an easy observation to make
It's a subjective one!! How many times do you want me to say it?
but to claim that any of them provide musical depth it rediculous.
Maybe if you're a music snob. It's not at all ridiculous to say that The Beatles provide musical depth.
The same way I know that milk is sour, except that in this case I listen instead of taste.
Uh, what has that got to do with it? Milk being sour is a physical thing. Your taste buds register it as sour - that's what they're programmed to do. Not at all the same thing as musical taste.
No, you are being entertained and there is nothing wrong with that. I myself can enjoy a movie for mere entertainment for example, but in the end I know that I'm better off with the stuff that is a true work of art. Maybe you people haven't realised it yet but atleast I'm trying.
