you see rich and and Danny MO and I have had this same discussion. And they Totally disagree with me. He's just not my favorite bass player. and I know who you think I am and you got the wrong guy. I can't stand billy sheehan, you can trace back anything I ever said about vic wooten, I do have a soft spot for Marcus since I dig his movie soundtracks.

Ok you have given me the fact that Paul turned a bunch of people onto bass and that he is responsible for bass education as to reasons why he is a good bass player.

Neither of these make you a good bass player. they just make you visible. Kurt Cobain made Dressing poorly popular. was he a good guitarist? Devo....well actually I love Devo so I'm not gonna bring that up. Paul McCartney is a good bassist because he did what was right for the song easy or hard. he didn't go out of his way to strut his chops but he didn't under play either. He just gave it the right amount. My original statement is addressing the original quote which, while poorly spelled, addresses that paul makes bass playing look easy. thats cause what he's playing "tends" to be easy. that doesn't mean bad. and trust me I may be the only berklee student who's ever told you that in your life. Look if anything at all I'm a country bass player i've played more country around the casino's in michigan then any other kind of music. at the top of music I love list is Motown and hip hop and R&B, after that I like Ska, after that pop rock, after that funk fusion.

It's like I can't go anywhere without stepping on Beatles fans toes. Ya'll still upset that the stones were a better band :D

just so I can have some accuracy:
Before Paul McCartney, nobody gave a toss about being a bass player, most people didn't even know such a thing exosted. There was a huge, huge amount of people who took up the bass guitar in the mid 60s (and a gear explosion that went along with that)

I just wanted to make sure you weren't considering the electric bass the ONLY bass.

I think it is a tendency of online forums - if these people were in a bar chatting over a drink I'm sure it would all be good fun, much laughter and evrybody would go home thinking they had a good time. But personality, humour and things like jokey "sparring" just don't come across in forums like this and invariably descend into detailed analysis of minutiae, which nobody even thought about when they were writing.

People treat this like normal conversation - but in normal conversation you can't play back every detail of what was said, word for word and people go on the overall impression created - they check this by looking at people's expressions - but of course none of this happens here and the words get pored over many times, when they were only meant to be taken "in the moment". :(

Totally. Anytime one expresses one's opinion in an online forum, it tends to come across as much more intense than if one expressed the same thing in a conversation. It can get personal really quickly and things tend to escalate, but people who have been on-line for many years learn to adjust their sensibilities.

Also, one's opinions tend to get over-simplified for the sake of argument. In reality, if we were in a bar having a conversation and someone brought up Tower Of Power, I'd have a big thumbs uip for them. Not that I'm a huge fan, but you know, Rocco is a beast on the 16th notes and I can appreciate that. However, In the context of denigrating someone else's playing- someone who I admit to having quite a weakness for- I might be a bit more dismissive. I just don't think that anyone in Tower Of Power is anywhere in the same league as Paul McCartney in terms of creativity, overall musicality, impact, influence, ability to reach an audience or start a social revolution through music. But that's where my head is at. Anyway, I may take Chris up on that drink offer.

The grammar thing wasn't directed at anyone specifically, has no place on a bass forum, but drives me insane. I really think that in ten years time, it will be acceptable to use any form of "your" or "you're" because nobody will remember which one is correct anymore. Then again, I'm turning into a grumpy old man. Did I ever tell you about the snow I used to walk through on the way to school? Back in 19- ought-4...

I think personally the text medium, unless your JRR Tolkien, Is a terrible place for expressing wit and sarcasm because vocal tonality and body motion (eye movement, hand gestures) are absent and really do not get the humor across in what you say. But Corin you gotta believe me I was really not trying to knock Paul McCartney I was just trying to answer the original question in the post that maybe it looks easy when he's playing because it is easy. Thats all I was addressing. I have nothing against easy bass playing nor do I think the Paul is incapable of doing something harder of flashier. he always does whats right for the music. My favorite bass line in the world to play is the "runnin with the devil" intro. Mostly because I like to make rooms shake. I gotta admit the beatles are not my era I grew up on a lot of hip hop and I'm from Detroit so your gonna hear just a lot of motown from me whenever I suggest music. But Paul is a fine bass player I'm sure I learned a trick or two from his playing. I'm just saying sometimes it looks easy cause it is easy

What part of the term "negative nancy" did you think was serious? :D ;) :cool:

To get back on topic.......

Oh, and maybe Paul's playing looks easy often because that Hofner is a 32" scale instrument. That definitely makes for a very different fretting hand movement. And playing with a pick looks much easier than it is too, doesn't Paul play with a pick a lot?

I saw Paul about a month ago at Staples Center. It was a three hour show. While he simplified a few bass lines, he also played piano, guitar and ukelele (Something, in a tribute to George) His voice was strong and bright. And at 60+? now. How anybody can diss the guy is beyond me.

He played 'Something' on a ukelele? lol, I'd like to have heard that!

About his voice... obviously I can't speak for that performance, but all in McCartney's live performances that I've heard in recent times, his voice has been pretty knackered. He can still sing in tune and (kinda) get the high notes, but his voice to me sounds really knackered out.
