Not in my book. I've enjoyed his playing for years, in spite of his being a prick. I've seen him act like a baby in public more than once. When he shuts the f*** up and plays, he's pretty good. But it sure isn't why I shelled out my hard-earned $$$ to see him. Most likely, I won't do it again.

Yes, but your book, my book or not he get's enough to buy a small house to play a gig and we get what we get.
He got there by making his demands, throwing his fits and being a prima donna in addition to playing the sh** out of the piano.
He did a similar thing in Berkeley when they played here. A woman sitting next to my friend said," Ok, he insulted the audience, now I am at a Keith Jarrett concert".
Like I said, it is part of his act and has been for years.
Snapping photos with flash at concerts is every bit as crass as his youtube clip, so there is really no good side to be on with that one.

It's one reason that I try to respect everyone who appears sincere...and isn't a dickhead. Sometimes people are dickheads and I can't help but respect them too. Sometimes people are insincere hacks, talent or not. Some people don't even like playing, but do it for money. Some of them happen to be talented. I strongly suspect that Michael Case loves playing music and what he’s saying doesn’t offend me, but I understand your objection to the words when you see them on your screen. Might be different if you were sitting down together talking, which I would suggest is probably not a good idea for you two.

What was inspiring about it unfortunately is how rare people will actually take a stand about their music.
If your music is not important to you how can you ever expect anyone else to care? The most disturbing part of the the thread has been Michael Case reiterating how it is "Just music" and the other "It's not that big of a deal" type responses.
Tear Peacock and I apart all you want but please, have some self-respect.

There are plenty of gigs where something hasn't been great. Actually most of them. Dick managers, crappy sound, too hot, too cold, the leaders girlfriend showing up with 10 page sheet music to Bewitched Bothered and Belindered with the least hip changes imaginable, water dripping from the ceiling, too much smoke, too loud, etc, etc, etc. The thing is, I love playing the bass. If I let this stuff bother me I might as well quit and get a job pumping gas. I'd make more money. Like folks have said, play for the joy. I find a way to have fun at every gig because I love playing bass... I respect myself just fine.

+1. I dig what Damon does too. I was raised in an Italian family on the south side of Chicago. If there wasn't discussion (yelling) around the dinner table then something was really wrong.

I don't care what the people whose music I love are like in person. To me, those are two seperate and distinct things. I can love the player and think the person is a hosebag (or vice versa) without losing any sleep any day of the week.

I more or less feel that way about listening to records or the radio. I feel different about plopping down money to see a show and then having them do something do dick-up the show.

Yep. He is a genius at self-promotion. Always has been. He's probably better at self-promotion than at the piano and he's a great pianist.

If he was humble and grateful I'd find this diversion humorous and entertaining. In light of his abject arrogance this just seems pathetic.

At least when I play gigs in finger painted coveralls I KNOW I'm being ridiculous and it ends up hysterical (in a Reefer Madness sort of way).

Real actual gig. My gig stories are all true. It's been 10 or 15 years ago. The Diva responsible took them all back at the end of the gig. She was pissed at me cause I tried to rip mine off like a male stripper.

I still work with her on occasion btw. She's a very good singer. I have to check about wardrobe with her when she calls. I get to rub that in perpetually.

There is a DVD available from the tour for this album. Herbie on piano, Dave Holland on bass along with Jack and Pat. It is F***in' amazing. Astonishing playing on it.

If that's the recording I'm thinking of, one of my students transcribed a Holland solo from a tune that was (I think) entitled "Blue", or something like it. It sounded fine to me.
