Well, it is tame and MOR compared to what he was doing before. I saw his quintet live and it was great. I really like Holland.

You would hate cats. Don't you have some sort of lumberjackish day gig? What good is a cat to an outdoorsy person? Can I interest you in a puppy instead?

Now that it has reached page twenty I think I am ready to jump in . . . but only with regards to Holland. I agree with Damon that there is something smooth jazzy about the quintet stuff and just rubs me the wrong way. Its not that its not great music . . . because it is, those guys could play pure crap melodies with stupid harmonies and still make it hip to listen to. BUT, I just can't pick that stuff out of my library if I want to listen to Holland. For me, its Conference or Triplicate (or Liebman "Trio+1"). I would really like to check out the group live though . . . maybe it takes on something different.

Also, just thinking about Holland/Metheny, that album with Roy Haynes is one which I can really dig. All three of them playing some really hip stuff.

It was fighting forest fires...I'm a high rigger these days and do some lighting design work (theatre, dance, music) when a project comes along that interests me. You're right though, cats are useless as a companion doing anything manly....I'm surprised you knew that. What I wanna know now son is why you would ruin a perfectly (no pun intended) good dawg with CATsup?

OK, I am downloading critcal mass now, it better be worth my 8 downloads.
I am really into his playing, even now, but he is much more inside than he used to be. Have you ever heard the Spontaneous Music Ensemble?

Edit: Decent record, some but not all the heads border on cheesy smooth jazz, the improvisations are great, and the playing is great.
Still, pretty far from Circle and "Confrence of the Birds"....

what do you make of the DH stuff with Kenny Wheeler and Steve Coleman, Damon (or anyone esle)? I've been meaning to check that out. I love 'conference' and 'triplicate', but also find a lot of the recent stuff too safe and polished. They're all such great musicians that they can play it safe while playing extremely complicated music.

It is obviously a very different vibe than Circle and the like. I LOVE the Circle stuff. The statement 'middle of the road' reads as a statement on the quality of his newer stuff. Say stuff like that and it's juat like swatting the beehive with a stick.

If you think it sounds like smooth jazz I think the same can be said for MOST of the ECM catalog. I'm sure you've listened to Eberhart Weber. Great live show but doesn't really translate on record. Talk about smooth.

I have "Seeds of Time" and "Jumpin' in" as well as "Triplicate". They are nice LPs, but I don't pull them out much. Kenny Wheeler's bands tend to be more interesting to me, even lately.
This new one is really good once the head passes, the band is really fluid and the players are great.
