Double Bass Peacock Blows off Costello...

But if you heard Elvis's explanation of that episode, he claims that he said the most offensive thing he could think of just to end the conversation, which he thought was nauseating. Now, you may not agree that it was the right thing to do, but it's something I might do myself. Of course, if I was a famous person, I'd probably think twice, knowing that I'd be quoted out of context, but then again, he was also pissed drunk.

There's always more to the story.

I'd certainly like to hear more from Peacock about it.

Here's more on this from a Bonnie Bramlett interview:

http://www.swampland.com/articles/view/32

Let's clear the rumors about the Elvis Costello news item from the '80's? Did you really punch him out at a press conference?

I slapped his face good. He was being disrespectful and out of line, stupid and drunk. It was my press conference and he was saying ****** all over the place. For the first time in twenty years, we had brought these Cubans here, who are now some of the best jazz musicians here. We took them to New York to be reunited with their family and the revolution had broken out in Cuba. Here's Elvis Costello going to call them a ******. Please. Come on. Anyway we had a big confrontation and everybody in the press was there, Chet Flippo and his wife. If I had hired a press agent I couldn't have gotten more press out of it. You have not seen a lot of interviews on me talking about it, but just to get it out of the way. It would be a crying shame for someone as talented as Elvis Costello to go down in history as the one who got the crap slapped out him by Bonnie Bramlett. I would like to do a duet. I challenge him to come sing with me, you little butt-head, come live here in this country you said you hated. We can do a duet of "Peace, Love and Understanding." That's not a historical event. That was the event of someone being drunk and someone being fed up with it. That was my first year of sobriety. I was in the bar of the hotel and I took so much verbal abuse from him. If I had been drinking I would have slapped him a long time before that. I had taken it to the limit and I didn't care. If anyone thought I had been drinking I didn't care, but they knew I wasn't because they had been on the road with me and watching me like a hawk in my first year of sobriety.

If you don't like "little old lady quilting bass talk", talk bass is not for you! I thought the article was certainly deserving of some.

I will say that I got involved in this conversation because it made (and still makes) me uncomfortable. I don't know what that says about me, exactly. There are several things that make me uncomfortable, mainly that we're talking about real people in a public forum without all the facts. For that matter, even with all of the facts, we're talking about real people in a public forum. I'm also not on board personally with the elitism, but I know that it's part of our culture (musicians).

We're opining on news reports and things that we've heard from people that we know and we're talking about real people in a public forum.

But, that being said, I'll have to admit that I'm enjoying a little the fray. It's been a while since we've had a really provocotive disagreement here. One were all of the sudden Chris Fitzgerald shows up, doesn't say "I'm the moderator and I'm watching you guys", but cracks a few jokes and tries to defuse the situation, passes out some psudonyms like they were pizza coupons. We love you, Fitzy and we know what you're doing here. Good restraint so far. I think we're close to the line, but may actually wrap this one up without major bloodshed.

All in all, I don't think I've learned anything about Elvis Costello, Gary Peacock or Lee Konitz. I don't think I've learned anything about the Irridium that I wouldn't have assumed.

We did learn that Phil is gay. That was cool.

Unless I see an opportunity to be really funny that I think may not present itself again for a while, I think I'm bowing out of this thread.

Thanks for the debate, it was a good one, although I think we all fell back to our original positions....except Phil.

That might what you do, I don't play music I am 100% behind.
In my situation there is normally very little money, so it only about the music, so the musical sitaution has to right or I will stay home.

I assume you meant you don't play music you're NOT 100% behind? Fair enough, I understand that all too well. Your chosen path doesn't however give the right to be an arrogant, judgmental **** sucker no matter how monastically dedicated you are and how well you might play. The girl pulling the opening shift at the coffee joint down the street is more important to humanity than you an' me an' Peacock put together Damo. You're just another schmuck with a bass trying to please himself so get off yer high horse.

Different, but Peacock made a choice.
HIS choice.
I had something different happen, but it relates (at least I think it does)- hired to play a gig.
Get there, play the first set, things are cool.
Start the second set, third tune just finished and the singer turns to me and says "Joe Blow is gonna sit in on bass for a few tunes now"

First, I was like "***?!!? At least ask me before a complete stranger plugs into my gear". But it gets better, the singer is calling this joker up and introducing him as I have my back turned putting down my bass- this guy walks up on the stage and grabs the neck.
First mistake.
Second one is talking to me like I'm an idiot for asking him what the hell is he doing.
Third one is his comments after I ask him to bang his wife/girlfriend while he played my Fodera (yes I did ask him).

Then he was like "*** MAN!?!?" I calmly explained that this bass costs more than his car and more than he could clear in a few months and he's a complete stranger to me (Fodera Matt Garrison 5 BTW) so I figured that to be safe and equal, services from his wife would suffice while he sat in or get the hell back in his chair and enjoy his drink before it got cold.

How this relates is, had I was informed and the guy payed me a little respect before hand by at least introducing himself, he may have played a few tunes.
Might have been the same with Peacock?? Costello walks in, throws down some tunes and expects cats to just fall in line because of....well he's Elvis Costello.

Just a thought.....Long way to go for that one though huh?!?!
LOL :D

I think this thread definitely needs some kittens for a calming effect on the collective blood pressure.

Please keep it respectful, if not warm and fuzzy.

My horse is pretty low, but my point in bringing it up is just that is I can get by doing it, Peacock certainly can.

So what do you guys think of Gary Peacock's time?

I have a Bud Shank LP where he is playing rock solid quarters. Beyond that I think he is pretty free with his time. Some people feel like he sold out after Ayler. I feel like he brings a lot of the concepts he developed with Ayler to everything he does.
In any case, when you are calling him for the gig, you would be beyond needing a timekeeper.

I take your point I still see a difference between artistic and working gigs. I also think it only applys when job you were hired for is the exact one you get asked to do the night of, or week of.
At no point is there any evidence Peacock agreed to play with Costello.

If the leader tells you to get a mop and mop the bathroom do you do it?
I remember a gig where the owner of the place tried to get the band to sweep the joint after - it didn't happen.

Playing the bass and cleaning the joint are two different things. I'm hired to do a specific job and that's provide music. After that I have no obligations to ANYBODY in the band or venue.

Every gig I play I attempt to play as an artist. I don't make a distinction between working and art. If I did I might as well get a day job then at least work would pay better.
