They're both good bands. And both acts have had some issues with personnel over the years. Pearl Jam's drum chair had been rotating quite a bit, but finally stabilized when they hooked up with Matt Cameron. And STP has had their hands full with Scott Weiland's substance abuse problems.

As for comparing the two? There were definitely a lot of comparisons between the two bands in the early 90's, but they settled that themselves as they both went off in different directions creatively.

For me, I prefer the songwriting with STP. I think that every record they made through No. 4 was pretty strong in the songwriting, performances and production. Having seen them live a couple of times though, I think that the vocals weren't nearly as strong as on the records. That may be where Pearl Jam delivers a bit better. I think that their sound on record is closer to what you'll hear from them live.

I don't feel too strongly about STP, AIC or Soundgarden. But I do own about 5 Pearl Jam albums. I don't listen to them that often anymore, but Vs. and Vitalogy hold up well. Ten is just way overplayed to me--if you're into singles, I can see why one might consider that the peak.

I've generally found Weiland kind of annoying, the decadent rock star bit gets old. The guys in Pearl Jam tend to have their hearts in the right place IMO. They tried to fight Ticketbastard, and they're big about paying respect to their forebears. Those things increase their appeal for me. YMMV.

Of that era, PJ & STP were two of the bands I found least interesting. I was more into Jane's Addiction, Fishbone, Soundgarden, RHCP, & Nirvana. Out of those two though, I guess I'd give it to PJ.

I might be wrong, but Fishbone was way before the seattle sludge genre, like about 10 or15 yrs ahead. Maybe more.

I'll go with STP for the overall catalog, but Pearl Jam "Ten" is IMO an essentially flawless album song-writing and production wise.

DeLeo and Ament both had an impact on my playing, with a slightly bigger nod to DeLeo.

I agree with this. I was just getting started with the bass guitar right around the time that "Ten" came out (I had played upright for about 5 years prior). I discovered STP not long after. Both Ament and DeLeo are great bassists, and I'm glad that they had an influence on my playing early on.

STP hands down. Better players, better writing, less pretentious and a hell of a lot less political.

I dunno, man... Vedder has had a way more successful solo career than Weiland. Not that a solo career is the be all, end all but Vedder's solo work has been damn good... Namely the Into the Wild soundtrack.

Anyway, I disagree about the writing. STP probably does have better technical players, but technical playing w/o the musicality has never done it for me. Not that STP doesn't have musicality but I think Pearl Jam wins there. That's all.

Politics... Meh. Politics and societal conservatism are pretty much how Rock & Roll came to be.
