I bought mine as a backup amp and it quickly became my rehearsal amp. I temporarily retired it to keyboard amp but after a frustrating set of practices where I left unsatisfied with my PF500's EQ frequency choices, it made a reappearance and man do I love it's tone! That saturation circuit slays me. I'm probably going to install a line out with volume control on the amp I like it so much.

It has an old Standel 12 inch speaker. (JBL)
Standel was the first to us JBL speakers.

It is great when used with a preamp,

I got a Studio Pro 112, but it don't sound

The OP titled the thread "Whats the best amp Peavey ever made" I don't own a Peavey Bass amp at the moment but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. I sold my Combo 115 / TVX 210 rig to a friend of mine a few years ago but I still use it regulary at our practice space at his house. I think I use it more now then when I owned it. I still own some Peavey PA gear so if that qualifies me for a number I'll gladly take one. If not ill jump back in when I finally get a VB2.

I think the best amps they ever made were the TNT/TKO/Combo 300/Combo 115 series of combos amps. They were in constant U.S. production for around 30 years and I would bet the majority of them are still working. They were built like tanks and weighed about the same as a Sherman. They are as reliable as an anvil and were priced right. At one point most of us owned one. We abused it or just played the hell out of it and gave it up when we were seduced by sexier gear (or because we started suffering from hernias or developed back problems from loading in and out of gigs) . ; )

hey since you guys seem to be the most educated about peavy amps i was wondering if you could give me some insight on a peavy xxl bass amp. its on cl for 200$ the seller says its a 2x12 300 watt combo amp. is it any good? and how much does it weigh rouphly?

The XXL 212 is a 100 watt, high-gain guitar combo amp, not a bass amp. It probably weighs about 60lbs.

I've got a chance to by an old 1970's or 80's Peavey 1 x15 bass bottom ported cabinet for $70. It has the original Black Widow 15 with Aluminum dust cap. Were these mostly 8 ohm speakers ? How did they sound? I haven't tried this out yet. How do they sound?

My experience with the 15" Black Widow speakers in a ported cab is limited to the context of an early 1990s TNT 115 combo amp. That being said, I really enjoy the way that amp sounds. Unfortunately, I've never hooked up another amp to the speaker for comparison, but as I write this I'm tempted to see how my Shuttle 6.0 sounds through it. I believe most of those speakers were 8 ohm, but don't quote me on that.

IMO, here's the bottom line: for $70, if it's in decent shape and you're in the market for a 1x15, just get it. I suspect you'll like it, at least enough to make the $70 worth it.

I bought my PV 115 for $150. As a stand alone cab I have no complaints. It is a 4 Ohm cab and I think it sounds great with either of my heads pushing it.

Most bass BWs are 4 ohm in 115 cabs. Some users have them swapped out for 8 ohm baskets depending on need.

Some old BWs have a problem with the foam filter on the magnet breaking down over time. It can gunk up the magnet inside. It can be repaired easily. It needs to be checked so that your speaker will last. You can hit me up or post a new thread if you buy it. Several people on TB know about BWs.

BW bass guitar speakers have great mid and high frequency cut, but the lows sound nice and round. If you really dig in, the highs will crunch in a pleasing way. To me, they have their own sound.

I've got a quick question. I am a Peavey lover and have just acquired an unloaded 2x15 cab. I want to put BW speakers in it and am torn between the two popular choices. One being the 1502 and the other being the 1505. I have read the forum threads and have figured that it's basically a stalemate. I play passive basses and a couple different heads. I'm mostly interested in getting the best speaker for bass. I have shopped online and the 1502 is said to be for bass while the 1505 is for PA. Can someone guide me in the right direction? Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the info on the Peavey 1 x 15 cab w/ the Black Widow speaker. If I decide to get it, I will post back here. I still need to get a bass head to go with it, but might use a Peavey solid state 260 watt combo guitar amp temporarily to power it.

I'm in,

I have a pair of Mark VIII amps and love them, both have minor problems with pots, Peavey customer service is great, on request they sent out circuit diagrams and dated the amps for me, yeah weight is a problem with these old amps but I reckon they are worth it, huge solid floor shaking sound and very reliable.

This pic is how I bought the second amp with some broken pots but the other one I have is almost identical.
