Peavey Classic 400 - Mega Thread - Part II

I bet thats a pretty interesting looking rig!

Does anyone know possibly Bbby what the circuit for resonance and presence do? I recall from the manual that it says something about changing the damping factor of the amp. What type of circuit is used to accomplish this?

Invalid Link Removed

the presence circuit controls the amount of high frequency feedback, and the resonance circuit controls the low frequency feedback. i'm pretty certain they're RC networks in the feedback loop. it's been a while since i've looked at tube circuits. bobby knows better than i do.

Ha thats pretty much how I pictured it! Those master controls are interesting and I havent seen another amp that uses something similar though Im sure there must be some. Ive got the schems for the amp somewhere but I was just too lazy to look for them...

I should have my C400 next week and then I need to get to ClubBass in TO to order the NV215.

I'll post some pics if everything works out - thanks for your feedback Tom and James.:bassist: :bassist:

Just won this on E-bay, paid a little more than I wanted, but it's a good exchange rate right now so what the heck - $710US - $760 Cdn, now I've gotta get the NV215 ordered....then :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

That is how I usually run My Classic 400 through My NV 215. The 810 is just too big to move much. The NV 215 with the Classic 400 is An absolute tone monster can get mighty loud but sounds great. Nice vintage sound but much cleaner not wooly or muffled at all. Pretty much you get out just what you put in.

VERY NICE! You'll be in heaven. I paid about $780 for mine. It's heavy compared to other amps, but does this thing sound sweet.

I even said the other day about how I might want another amp, like an SVT or 2 vintage V4-B's. The other guys in my bad said, "WHY?! That thing sounds SO good!"

And we're talkin' insane vintage gear heads here to.

I decided to try to hunt one down in tweed, like yours and save the carpet one for back-up.

Thinking about recovering the black one in signiture stock marshall tolex.

Anyone tried to recover theirs?

Very Nice!

Thanks man can't wait to pick it up:D, I'm thinking of pre-rigging a chainfall inside my tailgate, just kidding - if what you guys say is true the "weight" will be worthwile.

If only I could get the NV215 in tweed, I can buy that tweed tolex on the bay - just don't know if could bring myself to hack up a brand new black tolex Berg.

Would look absolutely killer though:eyebrow: :eyebrow:

As robb said, "Resonance" is patented. "Presence" is usually a control seen on guitar amps. There is another company that incorporated a resonance control on a bass amp recently, but we never did anything about it.

When the C400 first came out, Peavey got a few complaints from customers with piezo tweeters. The presence control is tuned so that it will eat many piezo tweeters if you turn it up...something to be aware of.

So... YOU're the one. :eyebrow: I was bidding on that too!!! You lucky ¤%"¤%/¤&:spit:
But seriously: congrats! Use it well.:bassist: :p

Thanks. I'm gonna play the tweed off it!!!!

You devil....you pumped the price up there for me, I paid a little more than I had hoped - if it wasn't a tweed I would have probably let you get that one.

Would you seriously have shipped it to Norway?, I notice you already have a black one - so you must really be diggin' these C400's.

Dale.

Yeah. Sorry 'bout that. I most certainly would ship it! I put it on a boat. Really cheap. BTW - they are impossible to find over here, so I'd probably manage to sell one of 'em for more than twice of what i'd pay. But again, congrats!

Last night I tried getting a good crunch channel sound for the first time. Basically experimenting with setting it so I can switch back and forth when I might use some fuzz as an effect. Gain all the way up, bass about 5, bass boost on gives a pretty fat gnarly tone. However if I dont turn the gain up all the way I dont get much distortion at all. Anyone else experience this? Perhaps more distortion can be obtained by using another tube type in place of that particular 12AX7 or maybe even a different brand?

Another thing is that the channels do not seem to be completely isolated. If I have the previous mentioned settings on the crunch channel and switch back to the clean channel I still get some of that distortion. It could just be the design. Anyone else experience this?

I have really grown to like this amp. Fresh strings on a P bass, a pick, and the Berg 610 is it!

I've not noticed the channel isolation... I tend to use clean & combine these days more than clean & crunch.

the need to crank the gain mixed with the other issue, you may want to swap som preamp tubes. I know 1 or 2 of them are shared with 1/2 to the clean channel and 1/2 to the crunch channel.

I've got a pair of JAN Phillips in spot #1 & 2, but want to try a couple re-issue Tung-Sol

Thanks James. Yeah if you get a chance check out the gain on the crunch channel. Its a bummer that when I get the crunch channel sounding the way I want the clean channel is no longer clean but it could be that I am trying to get more out of the second channel then it was intended for.
