Peavey Classic 400 - Mega Thread - Part II

Hi,

I got nothing important to contribute, just that after reading this thread I wanted to go to the rehearsal room and play a few notes on my Classic 400. Well I just did, it's really a massive sounding amp. :)

I bought mine in early '97 IIRC when I was looking for a full tube bass amp. My dealer suggested me the Classic, I ordered and newer did regret it. Here's an Invalid Link Removed of my rig back in '97. I used a 2x12 and a 4x12 box, especially for this show. The C400 and the 4x12 was my standard rig for shows for about 8 years. Finally I got me a Ampeg B2-RE and a Fender Bassman 2x15 just because I don't live near to the rehearsal room. I have to get my rig out of the car and to the second floor, which is not possible for me to manage alone.

One nice story about the show from which this foto was taken. We opened for BAB (which is a very famous Band in Germany) this evening and their bassplayer stood in front of my rig with his jaw dropped open. I still remember this situation. :)

Hi, I'm brand new to this forum; just discovered it about a week ago while researching some gear over on harmony central.

Anyways, after reading these threads on the classic 400, I'm about to pull the trigger on one of these Peavey Classic 400 amps. It's the black tolex version. I'm currently playing an Ampeg svt 200t through an Ampeg 6x10 cab and it sounds great, but I want to get into trying out a more powerful tube sound and these look like a great bang for the buck.

How will an Ampeg 6x10 cab handle this 400 watt beast of an amp? Will the classic 400 be too much?

bump for my favorite bass head still and for the public admittance that after jumping from a couple boutique cabinets into old school budget 1820 cabs from Peavey and planning and scheming on stuff from BagEnd and EV.... I really can't want for better tone than my C400 into my 1820 :bassist:

I think I'm set (minus the rack compressor... I use a pedal board now)

Thats cool - sound wise how would you describe this combination.

1820's are such good value for money - I might just try to pick one up and try it out.

Any sound clips?

Whats everyone else using NV610's?, NV215's? , 810TVX's?, Orange 115?, HS410? so many cabs I'd like to hear in combination with this head:eek::eek:

Argh! Just as I was about to join the "Classic 400 owners club", the morons at FedEx went ahead and made sure I'd have to wait by breaking two of the power tubes off during shipping.

At least the pre-amp tubes survived.

So now, after reading all the posts in the original megathread and this one, I've ordered an octet of Sovtek KT88's from TubeDepot...

Anyone ever set the bias on one of these monsters? I got the .pdf from James' site but have a couple of questions.

My plan exactly!!!

I almost sold mine like an idiot, I was having problems with the compression curcuit and it took me forever to get it back but when I did and plugged it in I was reminded of just what this head is capable of. It woulda been the 2nd time I sold one and regreted it. Zoomboy has my first one and this one goes no where...
Here she is.

That is the baddest looking amp ever made.

Yes it Is one Bad Looking Rig and The Original poster of "I almost got rid of it like an Idiot" has gotten rid of it in a trade for a Sunn 300T head. So now it is Mine and I am not going to get rid of it for anything. Although I won't say he was an idiot for getting rid of it to me and the head he got for it was his long ago and he really wanted it back so deal done. And we are both happy tube amp owners.
