Peavey Classic 400 - Mega Thread - Part II

I'm preeeetty sure I just bought your head Frosty! Can't wait to hear it!

Anyone A/B'd this with a Mesa 400+? I have one and I'm curious how it'll stack up.

Also... does anyone know how many of these amps were made? I can't imagine there was a huge market for an amp of this size at that time... any guesses? 1000? 3000? Anyone know what these were new in stores for when they first came out on shelves?

Yep - you did buddy - congrats, I just got too many tubes at home right now and just bought a really really nice Larrivee guitar, so my loss is gonna be your gain.

I can't even imagine anything burying my 400+ in volume right now... I also can't wait to have it buried in volume though...

Soundwise, I assume it's less midrangey than a 400+? I'm expecting it to sound like my YBA-200 on steroids.

Get ready - the thing is insane - hope you got some good cabs!!

I'm liking the sounds of that. I like the fact that my 400+ is pretty midrangey- it cuts through the mix better than any other amp I've played, and it still has a tight low end. I'm just looking for something different- simply because I like to try it all. :p

+1 to what was said about that Peavey midrange deal....IMHO the only thing it doesnt do well is "subtle", if you want classic rock tones, loud and clear right through to tear your face off distortion - it'll do and at volumes, in comparison, really only attainable with 2000 watt PA amps, it's shockingly loud - I'm sure your gonna love it and being in tweed - it's even rarer....

When I sold my Peavey to James he was the only one willing to actually buy the thing, everybody else wanted to charge me for hauling it away.

I actually was looking at another tweed that got away just prior to yours going up for sale. I swore not to let another slide... that was why I jumped at yours when you let it go.

I still cannot thank you enough and it's still the perfect head for me.... I love the thing.

I finally ordered my Bag End D12-B (oiled Birch 2x12) for it. it should ship in about a week :hyper: :hyper:

Even though mines gonna be gone to another good home soon....I still look foward to hearing how that works out James - I heard a set of Bag Ends (15's) for the first time the other week - they sounded great, really nice.

Also thank you for all of your help and advice during my C400 ownership, it is truly a great head, but theres something about the vintage SVT's that I can't walk away from.....

Still gonna be hanging here though......most excellent mega-thread.

I'm currently using a BagEnd Q10BX-D with my Mesa, and I love the sound of it. I think it's the one piece of gear that I own that I will never get rid of, solely because I bought it on a whim when I was 15, not knowing it would beat out any other 4x10 I could buy in town. I'd like to add some 12's to it some day, but I'll experiment with this new amp for now :D

For tube bass amps, Ive got the 400+, a Bassman 135 + GIANT 4x12 cab, and a Traynor YBA200, so I have plenty to compare it to in terms of sound, but volume should be interesting.

I read the entire 53 pages of the PRevious C400 thread.. some pretty cool info in there! 500 or so amps made... probably 150-200 tweed I would assume. Awesome.

Owning both the YBA-200 and the Classic- 400 and being able to compare them side by side I would not say the Traynor and the Peavey sound very much alike. The Traynor has a lot more high end energy than the peavey that is difficult at best to tame. The Peavey is capable of lows That the traynor can only dream about producing. Both are fine amps just not the same voicing. Don't forget the tone controls on the Traynor are cut only where the Peavey is cut and boost +/- 12db I believe.

Cool man. I can't say enough good things about my BagEnd Q10BX-D.

I'm thinking of grabbing 1 (or 2 eventually? HAHA!) S15B, or S15B-D to add to it. I'm really looking to kill people with this rig.

what mad you go with BagEnd James?

what made you go with BagEnd James?

I spent the 90s playing through them exclusively. I sold them when I gave it all up briefly. Coming back into it, I jumped from Schroeder to Accugroove and ended up with an old school Peavey cab with an 18" and a pair of 10". We threw a local GTG and DEVILMAN had his Trace tube monster hooked to a BE D10 and a boogie cab with a BE 18" driver in it.... it reminded me why my rig in the 90s smoked all others :smug:

The combo of DEVILMAN's rig and the fact my old S12 was the best sounding cab to mic in the studio.... made me choose a D12. I might add a S18B-B at some point if I want more girth.

Awesome man! I haven't had a chance to really let this amp rip through my Q10BX-D yet, and to be frank.. I'm a little scared to. It had no troubles handling my 400+, but that amp has little to no distortion, and this is a little different. All in all, this is a pretty unbelievable unit though... I have a feeling my 400+ will be finding a new home very quickly, though I'll keep it if I can afford to- just to have around.

Also.. after reading through the Megathread Pt.1, It seems you CAN connect this thing to a 2ohm load, but it's run at less power, eh? Any idea how much less that might be?

Also... I'm having trouble finding that link for that cable to run 2 4ohm cabs at 8.

thanks again for all your help James (and everyone)! This amp is completely Ridiculous.

Nono, but I read this:

You can short the output of a tube power amp without hurting it...well I know you can on all Peavey tube amps, but it should be fine on others. If you did run a 2 ohm load on the Classic 400, it would work safely, but it may sound different.

So... I shouldn't have any problem running a 2ohm load at the 4ohm setting (though it may sound different) correct?

So... who is still using a Classic 400? I sold mine a while back but it is the only amp I have had that I miss (besides the Aguilar DB 728). I still think the C400 is the baddest bass amp I ever played through.

I still have mine here, in tweed, still waiting for tubes. I keep coming up with other things I need. The thing is beautiful and will absolutely kill about any other amp. Next time I'm in the market for another amp it'll be tubing up this thing instead of buying something else. Running on my backup T-MAX now and it won't die either, sounds good too with an old Mullard in the pre.

Have you had a chance to use the amp yet or has it always needed tubes? You are right it pretty much kills most amps. I like the tone of my old SVT more but the C400 is definitely louder. It had more tone options as well. I wish I had them side by side so I could see if the C400 can cop a good SVT sound.
