Peavey MiniMega 1000

Could somebody who's been following this thread (117 pages) sum it all up for me with a simple answer to a simple question?

Should I buy a MiniMega 1000?

Just caught a few of the horror stories in a search and I'm concerned. Was almost sold...

What's the final verdict on these things?

OK. So it was 2 questions.

My experience: Got one used off reverb via sam ash and it is solid and reliable. Bought a 2nd one from a TB member cheap after he got it back from warranty repair and did not feel confident anymore. That one worked two rehearsals and died. Much to my surprise I called customer service and they sent me a return shipping label for a warranty return even though I am the 2nd owner. Two rehearsals and the fan went hyper speed and noise AND THE SOUND WAS farty and distorted. Got to call again soon. Get a good one and life is good. Other ones not so much IMHO

Pros:
  • Very powerful at 8 and 4 ohms.
  • Evenly voiced but not sterile.
  • Versatile, lots of buttons and knobs it that's your thing but sounds good with everything at noon.
  • Good value. MF discounted mine pretty heavily.
  • Support from Peavey seems good if you need it.

Cons:
  • Moderately loud fan combined with high pitch that modulates frequency when lights cycle colors. Not noticeable at gig.
  • A bit larger and heavier (10lbs) than other micros.
  • Carry bag not so hot.
  • Some have had problems.

Verdict: Good deal if you get a good one.

I come here for answers too. I have a MM, had it for two years and maybe I'm doing something wrong:
Last weeks rehearsal, acoustic drums, heavy hitter. One guitar, 50 watt half stack. Epiphone Tbird Classic Pro through Ampeg SCR-DI into the mini- mega and out to two Hartke Hydrive 4x10's. Gain is at noon volume at 3 and it's barely keeping up and clearly was cutting out.
Opinions? Cause I gave Joe a negative review earlier and if I'm wrong I'd like to know.

I also want to add something that has not been discussed much in this thread, and that is the MiniMega KOSMOS A function. It's a synthetic sub-octaver. Not a general-purpose effect, to be sure, but lately I've been learning some bro'-country songs. (An in-demand bassist is one who knows a lot of songs, right?) So today I looked at "Body Like a Back Road" by Sam Hunt. The bass part is sparse and relies on a low F dropping to the subdominant C, also touching on the even lower Bb. Normally this is drop-tuned five-string or synthesizer territory, but I found that by carefully setting KOSMOS A, I can get the exact sound on the record by playing the F on my four-string at the 8th fret on the A-string and dropping to the C and Bb on the E-string. The pitch of the C is actually heard and felt as lower than the F at the 1st fret on the E-string, with or without KOSMOS A engaged. The low Bb is not as strong, probably a consequence of my cabinet response falling off when I get down there. With a good PA subwoofer, it would probably be equally strong. I don't know if Peavey intended KOSMOS A for this, but it can be practical for faking a five-string sometimes.

Be SURE you have full AC voltage to the unit. Put a voltmeter on the circuit while playing.

I've been following this thread since the beginning and have been on the fence about getting an MM too.

StraffordMike, good of you to state your disclaimer and possible retraction. If your rig is cutting out, there is definitely something wrong. Maybe it's the head; maybe not.

Is it overheating? Are you running below 2 ohms? is there an attenuator switch in the wrong position? Plus all the "duh" stuff like bad cords, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you having similar issues with your pre/power amp rig and the same two cabs as well?

Ahh. You're paying attention. I don't think I'd describe it as the same problem, but point taken. I'll look at the cabs. One is fairly new, but the other was used, but appears to be fine. Anything I should look for in particular? Now I was using the new Hartke with an 8 ohm Ampeg 15 so that takes the older used Hartke out of the loop. I'm not trying to rock the boat, I just want to know why I can't be heard.

The Crown wasn't cutting out it just wasn't 3000 watts loud.

How do you set your eq, are you scooping the mids?
