Those cases are quite rare. They came out between the first and second style and weren't around long at all. The tuners are generally bullet-proof, can they be tightened?

cool fact about the cases, thanks! the tuner gears are tight, but the worm gear on the peg just has a lot of slop before it engages either way.

time to join a new club i guess, just brought this home last night. One owner bought new in 79 by the seller's dad. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to sell the family heirloom...
Came in a painfully original case with a green shag interior and duct tape "protected" exterior. best part is the zip-tie and electrical tape handle. 79 - this was before the black molded cases when they still used a generic case.
Neck is straight to a fault though, pots are pretty clean and switches good. Tuners have tons of play though, is this common? gonna have to look at replacements if this is to be a player.
Stoked to finally get my hands on one though, should be fun

*edit: for the record of ongoing sales histories, i paid $650 for this one.

no, its quite filthy in fact, decades of grime, pitted chrome, string ground pickups and its fair share of general road wear.

Thanks! I was fortunate to come across a local seller with a "case queen" about 2 years ago. I love it! T-40's are a blast! I don't think you will be disappointed.

Has anyone fitted their T-40 with LED indicators for the switches? I have trouble telling which position the pickup toggle is in while im playing and would love to have a little 3 color LED that told me. I figure it couldn't be too hard to wire in, and i guess id have to fit a battery for it somehow...

Yeah, I have encountered more of the "road warrior" T-40's than ones that have lived a sheltered existence, like mine. They were made to be played hard.

So the T-40 wiring diagram only shows one red wire going to the jack. Is there no ground wire going to the negative connector on the jack?

are you looking at a wiring diagram or a schematic? A schematic may show common ground symbols and not direct wiring connections.
The answer is yes there is a negative (black wire) connection from the input jack, directly to the first closest common ground point, the phase switch.

This is very nice, I’ve long been curious what a reverse headstock would look like on a T-40. Pretty nice as it turns out!

That is really sweet. Is the body ash? Even without the huge stock bridge, an aesthetic feature that's really distinctive, it still looks 'right'.

Thanks! The body is tulip poplar. I also put a belly cut in the back to lighten it up a little more.

Yeah I remember you saying that. I've been planning a similar build as well. Sending an original guard to Spitfire Tort to create a template this week. Going to design it to remove the pickup rings. I'm still undecided what I'm going to do for a finish (Olympic White or Kaye Transparent White).

I'm either going to have a vintage mint made, or go all in for a rad tort. Who knows, I'm being extremely indecisive ATM. Just starting the process and see where it goes

I like that look too. Cool contrast. I almost went for the no pickguard approach but thought it would change the stock look too much.

No pickguard would have it looking a bit like the T-45, which always looked a bit naked to my eyes. Agree that this is much cooler!
