I have a line on a '78 T-40 and wondered if there was any significance to the year. It has the toaster pups, but are there any other issues to be wary of with that year? It's natural and in good condition.
I'm not worried about the deal I'd get. It seems very reasonable. I haven't seen it, but I may make the 1 1/2 hr drive for the price.
Again, just was wondering if there were any pluses or minuses to the year.

Yep, first year offered. I had one of the first ones. Shouldn't be much different from the '79 or '80. The pickups changed a bit down the line is all I remember.

Thanks. I've just gone through the thread and figured that '78 was the first year. I don't have any other info, and just the one pic of the one I'm hoping to snag. I do note that the case is the rounded version, rather than the rectangle. Seller hasn't got back to me. I've lost out on a couple of others, and worry that the same may happen this time.

The original rectangle cases weren't around very long at all.

FINALLY! Gimme a numba!

I've been looking for a T-40 for awhile now, but have had a few slip through my fingers. I know you can't beat a freebie, but this was the deal I was looking for.

CL seller had this posted for last night only at $70. I emailed him but said I wouldn't be able to get up his way until tomorrow (today). Well, his emergency was over and the price readjusted (as he said it would) to $120. I pulled the trigger and drove the hour to his place today. I must say I'm happy with deal so far. I haven't even plugged it in yet.

1978 natural T-40 with original case, Levy strap, Dunlop strap locks, a nice gig bag, a Stu Mac truss rod wrench, planet waves tuning machine winder, and a little Crate BX-15 thrown in for good measure. All for $120.

This thing is in remarkable condition with very little fret wear, little or no wear on the neck finish, etc. The pup surrounds each have a little crack; I'll have to look for those, though you really can't tell without looking for them.

I'm just about to turn this over to my son (for whom it was bought), then I'll grab it back for a thorough inspection, cleaning, etc. So, don't give me a number, I'll leave that to my son. I'm pretty stoked, though.

Excellent deal! Looks just like mine, although that thumb rest on there is not original. What's your number on the back of the headstock? The 78's seem to have some poorly-computing variations.

If you're in any kind of recording situation I suspect you'll steal this from your son nonetheless.

I'm out of the T-40 club, sigh. Sold it to Band Dad. I usually check these posts every day, otherwise I would have gotten back to him sooner and sold it for $70. My loss is his gain, plus I needed the money badly And he was a nice guy, helping out his son. Hope he loves it! I f not I'll buy it back for same price, LOL! I thought he pulled the trigger on the black 80's T-40 in Sebastopol a few weeks ago, but I guess it was someone else. I am parting out my '82 T-40 for free to a few people who are waiting for me for like a month and then, no more T-40 cub for me. Sigh. Thanks-Nate

heres my 79 T-40 (per AJ at peavey)...purchased from the original owner with rectangular case, manual, warranty registration card and (unmounted) thumbrest...all original except for the hi-beams...$270 shipped as i recall (ebay) and worth every penny...not for sale but i might consider a trade if you have any mild-tempered concubines

As promised pics of my t-40. Got it almost a week ago and haven't been able to put it down. Talk about addicting. Guy was selling it for $320, got it down to $250 and bit the bullet. best decision ever. s/n 0034XXXX. puts it at about 79. Sweetest bass i've played. Think it just put away my L1000
