Hey, Nate! Thanks for that deal! I'm in my office, just about to give that baby an intonation and string-height adjustment. My son doesn't know about this yet, but he's planning on a get together with former band members today, and I'll spring it on him.

This is the first time I've seen a T-40 in the flesh, so to speak, and I'm impressed with much about. The weight is impressive, for sure.

I mentioned TB to you, but didn't know you were a member. There will be some here who would have loved to have seen this beauty in the TB for sale column.

And, thanks for the kind words; it was nice to have met you. Perhaps we'll see you around here on TB.

I plan on giving a more informed opinion on the T-40 after I've had the chance to tear it down and build it up.

About 90% of folks haven't read how it's controlled... not like a PBass.

Just travelling home on the train with my new '79 natural T-40. It's about 3 weeks older than I am, it's date of birth is written on the inside of the scratchplate! Only played it unplugged so far, but I couldn't believe the weighty resonance coming from it which puts my other basses to shame!

Update - Wow. This bass sounds unbelievable. Still figuring out the way to get the best out of the controls, I might mod the electronics so I can have regular vol/vol/tone/tone and 2 coil tap switches. Might harm resale value by meddling with it but I doubt I'll ever sell it. This thing has made me want to sell my beloved Precision!

GerManson, you might want to PM kingpin2512 (page one) and find out where he's at with handing out numbers. That said, these "clubs" are often loose knit, tongue-in-cheek affairs, with the emphasis on sharing info and relieving gas.
And... nice axe.

I saw this on the Boston Craigslist. Fender Squier Jazz with T-40 pups. Takes care of the weight issue - wonder how it sounds. Anyone else ever hear about or see FrankenFortys?

Not connected in any way to this auction just a heads-up for the rosewood fans on the thread. The bass is kinda banged up, especially the back of the neck but it is cheap enough at the moment.

That's really interesting. I always wondered what those pups would sound like in another bass.

I wish I didnt live so close to that Squier-40 there, so my GAS wouldnt be so bad!
Love that model jazz, love the t-40, can only imagine how nice that must sound/play, tho it wont have the epic sustain with whatever tiny bridge is hiding under that ashtray.

My GAS has long faded but man, that J-40 p) looks tight. I would think the J-40 would sound about like a T40 as Squiers VMJ is as chunky and nearly as heavy as a T40.....

And man (whines) a black and rosewood T40 on the bay right now....too bad its not in better shape. (Im holding out for a mint one) and its cheap now, but I don't think it will end that cheap, damage or no.

One thing I've noticed with the T-40 is it sounds very compressed (but in a good way). If I dig in hard it doesn't jump in volume like my P-Bass, and I can't get the same agressive attack using a pick like I can with the Precision. But this makes it great for fingerstyle, especially when recording!

I want to try out a set of flats but don't know whether to put them on my T-40 or my Precision as I really like the way they sound as they are at the moment... I think the Precision is gonna get em!

I love GHS precision flatwounds on my T-40, with the bridge pickup soloed its a really nice funky rolled-off kinda tone thats aggressive, but not as harsh or clangy as with rounds, and the neck pickup get deep beautiful lows. Combined together you get some sweet sounds.

J-40 is a great name.

Looking at the pup placement - the neck pickup appears to be exactly where a Precision pup would be so it would be even closer to copping a P-tone. Then when you split both buckers, you would end up with something pretty close to a '70's Jazz spacing. The bridge bucker looks a little close to the bridge for my taste, but who knows, with the T-40's tone controls, you could probably work that into a pretty usable funky tone.

I am creating a T-40 with a jazz neck. I like the jazz neck better, so I bought one. I'll let you know how it works next week. One other guy did this that I know of.

Anybody else put their favorite neck on a T-40?
