My '83 has the two piece maple neck.

It was done like that throughout the 80s. All Peaveys. My Foundation is just like that as well.

I wonder when Peavey started putting fret boards on the T-40's. Mine is a '79 and there is no laminated fret board like most guitars are made. I read somewhere that the two piece neck was routed and the truss rod inserted before is was glued up. I saw one on ebay that was seperating from the base end of the neck and I can see the glue joint in mine if I look real close.

As far as I know, all maple board t-40's are two-piece, no-frettboard. Only the rosewood boards have separate frettboards. I think this trend continued for a while even for models made after the T-40 was discontinued.

That's probably the reason why its weight doesn't bother me that much. The Peavey T-40 was my first bass and, aside from practicing and rehearsing, at the time I played lots of tropical music gigs. Most of them were private parties starting at 10:00 P.M. and ending at 4:00 A.M. => Six 45-minute sets with the corresponding 15-minute breaks (with slight adjustments to finish exactly at 4:00). The first picture in this thread was taken at one of those gigs.

Okay, here's mine. S/N chart says it's an '83; but Peavey Customer Service says it's an '85. So I guess it's an '85:

Looks just like my 83 T-60 only mines black with 6 skinny stings.
Check on the T-60 forum... just run a google search... Chip who designed the guitars is available over there.

1980 is probably right then. I think they switched in 81 (don't hold me to that, though).

On a more serious note - there is a nice selection T-40's on eBay at the moment - black, white, and a few bursts along with the classic natural/maple.
