Peavey TL-5 questions

Just lost out on one of these. Peavey TL-5... I took to long investigating it. How is the weight on these and is the neck comfortable. It looks fairly big in the pics but I'm not sure. Does anyone have experience with them? Is the neck similar to a G&L L2500? How do they sound?

I had a 2nd Gen TL-Five. That means it had the VFL pickups, like a Cirrus. Not the Super Ferrite pickups like the 1st Gen that you snoozed on. ;-)

1st Gen is Active/Passive. 2nd Gen is Active only.

Mine sounded great! Very much like a Cirrus. I sold it and kept (at the time) a Cirrus 5 and a Peavey GV. The reasons the TL went are:

- it was a little heavy for my taste.
- I didn't like the neck as much as the Cirrus or GV.

I currently have a G&L L2500 (among others). I'd say the neck profiles are pretty similar. The TL neck seems closer to the G&L neck than to the Cirrus or GV. And, unlike the G&L, the TL neck did have that sticky feel that comes with being glossy.

I can't comment on the similarites or differences between the necks but the sound is straight up "Jazz Bass on steroids".

The DynaBass preamp affords a wide variety of tones and the active/passive option is nice to have.

The weight is around 9lbs.

What is the nut width and how wide is the body at it's widest point/

]Here is my gen 2 Tl5
I bought it on eBay a few years ago. it had been stripped of the original blue colour and refinished quite nicely. Ive replaced the treble/bass pot but Peavey UK were unable to source me a mid/mid shift one which is still a bit flaky but useable. Not sure what Im gonna do once it gives up. Maybe a new preamp. Otherwise its a great bass, if a bit heavy and with quite a wide neck.

Sorry Cant work out how to upload image

Had to point it out. Helps separate those that actively want a bass from the others. I'd hear folks saying "I really want a T40" so I'd post links to all the ones currently for sale. Answers went along the lines of " If only it had a rosewood board", "Wish is was xxx colour" etc. Always the same, folks more in love with the idea of owning a bass than actually owning one.

I take it you're not in the UK, I know a little lady might be persuaded to sell her 1st gen.

Kodiakblair, I'm in the USA. Where does she reside? Funny you mention the T40. I got a great deal on one a few years ago. Nice bass for studio work but it's a bit heavy and not that well balanced for gigging. Also, I've moved to being more of a 5 string guy.

Wow! Good job. New 5-string neck or or did you modify the original neck?
Kept the same neck, 4+1. It's strung with La Bella Jamerson's and hasn't moved  Using the original neck limits your string spacing options, too wide and B + G will overhang the fretboard. It's tight, 15.5mm.

Currently trying to find if a German player stills has his TL-5 for sale. Afraid my own TL's are staying here in Scotland :)
