So, I was thinking about loopers last night, trying to fall to a sleep, and suddenly I came up with an idea how to use my B3. This morning I ordered a simple 1 loop looper kit to test my new idea. I take the B3 of the main board, and use it as a daughter board. Ill put in in the loop, so I can switch it on and off with just one footswitch. And I start using it in patch mode. I never use the B3 trough a whole song, I just turn an effect on in the chorus and off during verses or something like that, but in the patch mode the B3 does not support turning it on and off like that. But with the looper I can switch whatever wild effect on the B3 between songs, and the wildness is ready to be stomped on when I need it at That Bridge or at That Chorus or whatever. So simple, yet elegant. I hope. :hyper:

If this works, I am building a bigger looper setup next. :D

I thought the b7k would be a little overkill since I have the VMTD. Wait, "overkill" is that a word we are allowed to use here?

You know this is what has been keeping me from from buying a VMTD. I have a B7k and a VMT. But then I was thinking that I would really like to be able to add some more mids to the VMT's drive. What would be ideal would be trading VMT plus cash for a VMTD...

And another pedal breeder becomes a board breeder!

Look what @johnk_10 just finished up for Shu, Duke and I!

@Mosfed beware, this Source Audio stuff really sucks you in quickly!

That's the single thing I am most scared of. A $110 Manta, quickly becomes a Manta, OFD and Orbital with a hub and a hot hand and a midi controller. And then the midi hole sucks me in and I start thinking about more and more complicated midi setups, well, just because. So a $110 quickly becomes $1500 becomes $5k....

I know myself too well.

Yeah man. in about two hours my entire Gnome/meatbox fund was dismantled.

Been there, did that. :)

I'm hopeless, if there is an add-on, a free expansion slot, an unused jack, I always end up maxing out the system. Hopeless.

The problem with fuzz is that more expensive isn't always better - as we saw with that totally awesome Pump Labs fuzz.

With digital multis - you definitely get what you pay for.

And yes - I love my expensive fuzzes too....

I agree so much. What is available vs. what you pay for; the results and the gaps are huge.

I love Line6, but hate Line6 M-series OD/Fuzz/Dist. There are some settings that are usable if you dedicate 2 more FX slots to EQ and compress them. Not ideal, but they do exist.

I really liked the expensive boutique pedals I've owned in the past, but I've sold almost all of them since going down the digital/SA/Eventide/Strymon/Line6/Zoom rabbit hole. As amazing as a $300 fuzz might be, I would rather have a digital multi in the same price bracket pulling triple duty for the same price.

Or is it already into stupid territory? I have never seen a cleaner one.

I really don't need to be spending anymore money anyway...

Here's the link again

Vintage 1970's Big Muff w Box New Condition Survivor Collector Quality | eBay

It does look nice, but I'm clearly a biased and dissenting opinion. Some vintage gear is amazing and worth every penny. Some vintage gear is just old, and over priced because it is old. I take comfort in buying new to new-ish gear with the peace of mind that it will be either a)great; or b) made better by a warranty/distributor/company/update/etc.

Buy a Manta. Way more reliable than any vintage fuzz. And if it craps out on you @rsmith601 and SA will make better. Amen.

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Good price, but appears sketchy. Proceed with caution.

I wonder if I should add a SA OFD to my board? You know just because haha. It would be a nice companion to the orbital and manta.

As stated above, as soon as you have 2 or more SB2 pedals, the HUB just makes sense. It is a rabbit hole though, I have Hub, OFD, Manta, & Dimension. The rabbit hole makes me want a MWBD and Orbital to round them out.

Uh ... yes you should, it's a killer trio. :)

953553887556ca00d2c08e9c214fe5b4.jpg

I don't know if I've expressed my love/lust before, but that board is so on point. Not 100% ideal for my dreams, but I certainly can't criticize it for tone, form, or function. In other words... PASS THE SQUEEGEE PLZ!

When you have a hub, it is almost a MUST. I'll explain why.

First off, I love the OFD for getting dirt sounds, I love it for getting dirt sounds that I don't want to invest a full pedal on, etc. BUT, to me, it shines for Hub scenes. Want to make a jet Phaser, done, want to cut or boost volume, cleanly, done, need a volume pedal all of a sudden, done.

YES.

Alas, this is all I shall have until I have paid for college

When my college is paid off, I will...

JK, I will be paying for college forever. I was young and dumb, went to a private university, haven't found a job in my field in 2 years so far, and have more loans than I can manage alone. I filed for income based repayment last year, and that helped a lot, but it just reminded me that until I start making major payments towards my college debt I will be trapped beneath the debt monkey.

Come to me HUB...

Alright I could use opinions. 100 lbs fully loaded board.. too much or reasonable? I mean right at 100 lbs or under but that's still a lot to lift. Has built in casters and plenty of handles. Same size as a PT pro. I'm right on the edge of going to two boards... but even that, having two 50 lbs boards. I don't know. Thoughts? My current mess has me right about 65 to 70

If you're young and spry just do it, or get a band member to help. I'm turning 30 this year and in good health. Depending on the gig I bring a PTPro, PTJr, or my magic tone fingers. Each situation leaves me longing for something (lighter load/more tones/ANYPEDALSATALL!)

If you're not quite as young or spry anymore, cut your losses and switch to multi FX. I know it seems like a loss, but personally my brain understands and functions more like a multiFX. Once you wrap your head around the limitations they can be really inspiring.

100 pounds is pretty heavy... For me that is.

100lbs is heavy if you're not @jwr. For me though it has a lot more to do with bulk and weight distribution. My FearFul 15/6/1 is about 60lbs[never weighed], but real manageable. I can carry the Fearful with 1 hand (other bands have actually lauded my strength, not knowing what I'm carrying is essentially a light, loud, large, & bulky PA monitor that is 1/4 the weight of their bassists 8x10). My Carvin B1500 and Korg tuner in a Gator rack requires 2 hands just because the weight is less evenly distributed. I'm not complaining, I love my gear and schlep it for a reason. I can't wait to get my dream PTPro wired up to gig out soon. I miss taking up half of the stage.

Alright people, SA HUB is on it's way to me. I'll be picking up an Orbital ASAP. Any ideas on midi controllers?

Tech21 Midi Mouse or Midi Moose are excellent affordable options. Others in the SA thread have found comparable items with more or less features for different price points. I've used the Midi Moose and been content despite its limitations.

If you picked up an H9 you could use that as your midi controller (PLUS TUNER), and get a poopie ton of quality effects with it. Other cheaper options are the Line6 M5 or M9. Neither the H9 nor the M5/M9 are perfect midi controllers, but they could get you started while adding an effect slot to your board rather than taking away.

Man oh man have I had a bad week. :( Lots and lots of family drama and my brother being in the hospital on 3 separate occasions, one I drove him to, and now he's admitted there with only God knows whats' wrong. :( My best friend is also in the hospital now too with horrible kidney stones. I feel like I've been hit by a truck.

**** it. I'll just say it all.

My brother in law is cheating on my sister, who I love and adore and now I want to smash his piece of poopie face in. Not only that, but I think he's been doing it for years and she's still there!! She didn't leave him. She's trying to work it out and he's denying everything even though he was caught red handed!

My youngest brother was rushed by ambulance twice to the emergency room because of severe abdominal pain, only to be released when they said "ok you seem fine!", then I had to take him back and carry him because he's blacking out from pain. Now it turns out he may have an auto immune disease and something wrong with his small intestines.

And to top it off, my oldest sister, who is a raving lunatic, won't talk to me anymore because I wouldn't talk badly about my father with her. She has lyme's and it's taken a massive toll on her sanity. She has been crazy though for as long as I can remember.

I've been having to take double to triple anxiety meds just to function because I'm losing it. I'm not embarrassed to say it.

It feel weird opening up on Talkbass, but I know you guys are kindred spirits and may understand. Sorry if it feels like I'm being too big of a downer.

So sorry to hear all of this man. When it rains, it pours. I don't usually broadcast my issues to the internet, but the Breeder thread might be the one exception. I'll go out on a limb and speak for everyone to say that we love, support and appreciate what you do for our community as a member and builder/etcher. From what I've seen: When 1 member reveals a piece of themselves, suddenly 4+ other members come forth with a similar situation; sometimes with a happy ending! Stay strong man. Lift those weights, wire up that custom grande, and be there for your family.

I think you'll really like the orbital. I know I do. Chorus and phaser are not effects I use often but when I do, it's the orbital I use. And it sounds great
To me.

So, I guess I've got an update. It's been a bit since I posted here. I moved some things around and I think this may be like this for a while. The big game OCD is moving along very well. Hopefully it'll be a staple on my board when I get the final version. Im really content with the way things are at the moment. Sucks my Electric decided to take a dump!! I have to get it serviced when I can afford it. It still powers up so I guess that's a good sign. I hope. I know nothing about tube amps but I'm learning. Slowly. The fifth gear is holding a spot for the meatbox. I hope it'll squeeze in there when the day comes.

Sorry to hear about the amp man. I've been pretty fortunate with all of my amps(solid states), but less fortunate with my basses in the past 2 years. I just had to have a tuner replaced on my 2004 Thumb5 (2nd in the past year.) Your board is looking snazzy as always though. Your board always features peds I'm interested in, but just haven't justified the funds to try out (yet.)

Man, this is the best place..to vent..

So I found out today I probably need another surgery. This time its for a compressed nerve in my elbow. Tendonitis is so bad the muscles are wasting away around my elbow. My kid got kicked out of school and had reconstructive knee surgery in the same week. A potentially life altering business deal has been put on hold for the next 3 months...

Oh, and I'm in two bands that aren't doing anything....

On a serious note, man, I feel for you. Hope everything works out..... and punch the brother in law in the face for sure

Sorry to hear about all of those things Duke. Like I said above, this place is an exception to the rest of the internet. I try not to reveal too much explicitly, but I'm sure frequenters of the thread can derive what my life and lifestyle are like. I like to think that I have a light impression of you at least.

I hope your bands gig more so you can use those awesome boards, that you avoid surgery (or recovery quickly if it comes to that), that your kid learns to walk the straight and narrow, and that business can carry on as usual.

Lots of bad news with everyone here. Stay strong breeders! I'm in the same boat. If we ever meet, it's beers all the way around. Good group of guys. This place feels like my internet home haha

I would host a member of this thread if they ever come to Pittsburgh. I have an extra bedroom and good taste in beer.

Best wishes to you @jwr . Family problems hurt the most.

I've had a few more minutes to play around with the SA OFD. It's a pretty cool thing, being able to try out all kinds of dirt pedals on a level playing field so to speak. I was shocked at how small it is. It has endless possibilities in terms of flexibility.

But it's not going to get me to sell my fuzz pedals. Maybe I'm imagining it, but it seems like there's just something about the Sputnik, PPB, B:Assmaster and other pedals that the OFD doesn't do. I can't put my finger on what's missing, but I prefer the sound of those pedals on some level so far in the little testing I've had the chance to do.

I know what you're talking about with the OFD. I perceive it as lacking richness in the hi and hi-mids. That's just solo though, and I don't miss it at all in a mix. I did sell my other dirt once I got the OFD close enough for me, but I'm not a dirt connoisseur. I can absolutely see why others would keep other pedals around.

Be careful what U wish for, lol. Do U have a tennis dome, indoor golf driving range, or soccer dome in your town? If U answer yes, like Riverside Park?, then I have been to your city and WILL be there again and make U buy me a beer...

If you bring your boards(x3), I will buy you a case of beer and bottle of whiskey. When I out-drink you, I will play so loud you won't wake up.

I'm feeling a Breeder G2G coming on. This would be the most amazing thing ever!

Yes please.

just realized I'm missing an Altoids tin on my board

Keep it around in case a cute girl talks to you without realizing you're not the singer or guitarist:bassist:.

@Mosfed beware, this Source Audio stuff really sucks you in quickly!

Quickly and efficiently.

Saw this three weeks ago at West LA guitar center for $125. It was still here tonight, but marked down To $99. It's coming home with me. Put it through the paces and was very impressed.

Great score!

The OFD is the Swiss Army Knife of dirt pedals.

QFT.

Yes, since buying the OFD, my Dirt GAS has faded. I have only bought like 50 dirt pedals since then... :):D:roflmao::smug::thumbsdown::dead::confused::(:meh::banghead::bag:

Dude I think you and I are opposites, who like the same things. I buy OFD and sell dirt, you buy OFD and keep buying dirt. I buy H9 and sell tuner, BLAHBLAHBLAHBLAH(fill in blanks). I hope you know I still have much respect, and love reading your input on any and all topics. I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow and throwing an Amazon giftcard in the cart to buy some of the books you and others recommended.

My past experience with digital dirt pedals hasn't been that great. There is just something about the real circuit sound that I can't really put my finger on. But, SA does make quality stuff and I'm willing to give them a try. How does it sound compared to the dirt section of the Manta? Honestly I find the fuzz and overdrive tones in the Manta kinda blahh. Useable for sure but just lacking something.

I prefer the OFD over the Manta for dirt alone. Manta dirt(w/ filter dialed out) is unique and has a synthy quality. The OFD imitates other dirt and has an organic quality. Both are fantastic, but I prefer to use them traditionally. OFD for drive and Manta for filters.

I'm willing to bet the OFD bass or guitar is unmatched in their price range for digital dirt. The closest competitor would be the WMD Geiger Counter (or Civilian Issue), but neither offers presets or the straight forward ease of use SA is known for.

AxeFXII, Kemper, or software can probably run circles around the OFD, but that also involves multiplying the cost and form factor.

I like my OFD. I haven't regretted selling any other pedals because of it.

IMO, its the best digital dirt I've heard. However, I sold mine and now love my Darkglass pedals. You cant argue with the price of SA stuff, what you get for the price is amazing. I just don't like the interface and prefer analog for most things.

See above. I owned a B7k and didn't jive.

EDIT: Holy Fudge, I did not realize how long this post was because I started it, went out, came back, wrote more, took a snooze, woke, finished, posted. Sorry for the novel, I actually remember deleting a lot of things that I saw were answered by others.

So they're muffs? What makes them special? (asking out of curiousity, not being sarcastic or condescending at all... though they seem to be lacking a presets, iOS support, and a tuner...;))

That's the single thing I am most scared of. A $110 Manta, quickly becomes a Manta, OFD and Orbital with a hub and a hot hand and a midi controller. I know myself too well.

This is so true because I'm halfway down the hole myself. My finances have bottle necked my Midi plans, but I'm still happy and discovering new things despite my limitations.

However @Mosfed, you're actually already partially down the hole too, because you have an H9 Max. In theory you could add the Manta and the Hub for ~$200 used, and the Manta could be your preset controller if you plan it all out right. If you buy a Reflex (which you were already planning to buy?) then you could send midi exp through the H9 to the Hub and keep the 3 TRS spots open for your other devices. I'm not helping. Buy all the things.

Yeah I like the looks of the tech21 stuff. The disaster area stuff isn't much more expensive, does anyone know the difference?

Tech21 midi vs Disaster Area stuff?

Superficially I'd say Tech21 = less functionality, easier to use; Disaster Area = more functions, fiddlier in use

If all you need is program changes on one channel, go Tech21 (or One Control); if you need PC on more than one channel then go Disaster Area
What do you mean on a channel? If it's just for a SA HUB and Manta/Orbital all I would need is a two channel one?

The disaster area one looks great because it's so compact, the Texh21 looks great because it's cheap.

For an SA system you only need one MIDI channel, from the controller to the Hub; the Hub receives a program change and changes program in the pedals (or rather it downloads that program's scene data to all pedals).

In my setup with the SA DMC-3 I have the Hub (and all connected SA pedals) on one MIDI channel and the two Zoom pedals on one other channel each (the DA controller can control three different devices, A/B/C) . This makes it possible to call up different patches in the three parts of the board (Hub/SA pedals, MS-60B, MS-70CDR) as a single program in the controller. For instance Program 1 in the Disaster Area controller sends PC 1 on MIDI channel 1, PC 25 on channel 2 and PC 44 on channel 3, all with one button push. This lets me reuse patches, say I have a generic compressor/EQ patch in one of the Zooms that is useful for many sounds; I can then reuse that patch in different A/B/C program combinations instead of having to duplicate it for several different PC numbers.

So with the Hub I am controlling however many SA pedals connected to it as one channel, requiring only a one channel MIDI controller? So Tech21 Midi Mouse is all I would really need as I have no aspirations for anything Zoom or H9.

Thank you, this is very informative. I love this thread, such a wealth of information!

Bass whammy has midi....

Speaking of bass whammy, it would have been really nice if they included a midi out connection and the pedal was able to send midi CC data.

Would it work with midi mouse as well? I mean, I have a Raster so pitch shifting isn't a problem. Never been too interested in a bass whammy besides just trying it out.
Theoretically, but looking at the manual it looks like it would be quite difficult to administer program change numbers to make it useful in combination with other effects if you have it on the same MIDI channel and send the same PC number to all. You need a more capable controller or hook the Whammy up to a PC really.
